A purse-snatcher wanted in multiple towns might’ve gotten away, had an alert Merchantville man not chased down the thief, Cherry Hill Police said.

The alleged thief, David Zane Jr., of Westville, was talking with a woman outside Pathmark on Church Road Sunday afternoon, when he suddenly grabbed the woman’s purse and took off running, police said.

But Merchantville resident Gerald Smith, who was outside the supermarket waiting for his family, saw the alleged theft go down and chased down Zane, then held him until officers arrived on scene.

Zane, who was wanted by police in several other towns, was charged with theft and taken to the Camden County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.
