Deptford Police Officer James Stuart Charged in Shooting
A 27-year-old Woodbury man was shot in the head inside the officer's home early Saturday morning, authorities said.
A Woodbury man is in critical condition after a Deptford police officer shot him inside the officer's home early Saturday morning.
David Compton, 27, of Woodbury, was taken to Cooper University Hospital in Camden with a single gunshot wound to the head.
Deptford police officer James Stuart, 29, was charged Saturday with two counts of aggravated assault (one second degree and one third degree) in connection with the shooting, which happened at the officer's home on Stanford Avenue in Deptford at about 5 a.m.
Compton is not a police officer, according to the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office.
Stuart posted the $10,000 bail set on his charges and was released from custody. An officer for about five years, he has been suspended from the Deptford Police Department with pay, pending an investigation into the shooting.
As required, the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office has notified the state Attorney General's Office of a police-involved shooting. However, the prosecutor's office investigation into the circumstances of the incident continues.
