DiCarlo Fills Vacancy, Daws New West Deptford Mayor
The West Deptford committee filled their open spot in quick fashion Wednesday night.

The West Deptford township committee didn’t waste any time Wednesday night in finding a replacement for retired mayor Anna Docimo, making their pick in less than 10 minutes from the three candidates put forth by the local Democrats.
After hearing brief summaries from Bill Gigliotti and Denice DiCarlo–Hunter Kintzing was unable to attend the meeting–the committee immediately shifted to nominations for the vacancy.
After a nod from Donna Szymborski and a second by Hugh Garrison, the township committee voted unanimously to bring DiCarlo on to fill the vacant spot for the next year.
While DiCarlo slid into Docimo’s old chair, the role of mayor shifted to Len Daws, who was also a unanimous selection, with Garrison stepping in to fill the deputy mayor’s spot. Both men will have brief terms, serving just until the reorganization on Jan. 5.
With the selection of a new committee member and a presentation by Ray Angelini, Inc. on a proposed solar project at RiverWinds the only two items on the agenda, DiCarlo called it the ideal situation for her first meeting.
“I just want to jump in and do the right thing,” she said.
And that’s exactly what she did, firing a handful of questions about the solar project after a lengthy presentation and public comment session, with a particular focus on exactly what the power purchase agreement would potentially save the township.
With her background in finance, DiCarlo said she wants to be closely involved in budgeting and finding ways to strike a balance between the quality of township services and holding down the tax rate, as the township transitions to a new administration.
“Hopefully they would at least consider me for that role,” she said. “I think that’s where I can add the most value.”
As for the step up to the dais, DiCarlo, a veteran of the school board, said getting a seat in local government is less important than getting things done in the best interests of residents.
“Like any board, sitting at the chair is just a small portion of the job,” she said. “I’m more eager to get in and start working for the taxpayers.”
DiCarlo’s selection to township committee heralds the first of many changes to township government, with committeemen-elect Ray Chintall and Sam Cianfarini set to be sworn in just three weeks from now.
“Change is what the voters wanted,” DiCarlo said. “It’ll be a challenging year for all of us up there.”

I was curious how this will all work out when Sam and Ray get into office. How long will Mrs. DiCarlo's term as mayor last ? Will there be another vote next year after Sam and Ray get in. I like Denice, Ray and Sam and don't have a problem eitherway but was just curious how the process worked.

DiCarlo will fill out the year left on Docimo's term, and she's not mayor. A new mayor will be chosen at the reorganization meeting on Jan. 5.

Mrs. DiCarlo oversaw the largest tax increase in at least a decade while she was chair of the finance committee for the BOE. Holding down the tax rate must not have been on the agenda during her term there. Please don't forget that a $0.12 (down from the $0.18 that the BOE originally asked for) tax increase is what her "background in finance" gave us.

True, but it should be noted there was a massive slash in state money to the district at the same time as that increase.

During the committee candidates debate, Mrs. DiCarlo said that the township wouldn't be in the debt that it is in if someone with good financial experience had been there to see the problems coming. I argue that she didn't see the problems coming for the school district when she was there.
And just look at her record on the BOE. She served one three year term and the budget increased every year while she was there. Personally, I can't wait to see what this year's budget looks like with Mr. Guzzetti's financial experience, which he touted during last year's BOE campaign. I say it'll be another year of increased spending. Anyone want to bet against it?

I attended the meeting last night and what a joke.
hunter never showed dicarlo brought back memories when she was with the boe.
no wonder they didn't want her.
i thought i was seeing docimo all over again.she thought they picked her for the role of mayor.she had no clue about the solar project,which is another joke and the township if approved will be another financial burden on the taxpayers.
just three more weeks and the new regime will take over and dicarlo will be on the backburner where she should be.

Red, don't believe that for one minute !!! Gerry White, Steve Sweeney and George Norcross have no intention of giving up the West Deptford "honey hole" that easily.The solar project is clear evidence of that. Their "hand picked" candidates were defeted and now look, one of them beat C&C to the swearing in !!!! Don't kid yourself Red, this is "Plan B" by the Gloucester/Camden county Democrat machine to retain power here. They are not done stealing from you yet.....mark my words you heard it here first.

The state has slashed aid as a way of living within its means; the same should go for local givernments. Go through that budget on a line item basis and there are places to slash. Somehow money was found to resurface tennis courts for the few tennis players and money was ound for visiters stands. Two part time people were just added to do payroll rather then look at outsourcing. How many administrators do we have and need and how many coaches do we have? It is time that the reality of reduced spending on extra-curicular activities is needed.
