Field of Dreams Shutting Down, Work Begins This Week

The project aims to revitalize the 16-year-old playground.

Field of Dreams will shut down for the next two weeks Monday morning, as work begins this week to restore the faded paint and worn-out equipment at the 16-year-old playground.

Weather permitting, volunteer workers will start the process, taking down the hand-painted signs for restoration and temporarily removing some of the equipment as they get set for power washing and re-staining and painting during the week.

Major work is set for the weekend, according to a plan by the township, with volunteers from Johnson Matthey and Solvay Solexis set to stain the bulk of the wooden playground.

“We’re going to bring the playground back to its original state,” committeewoman Denice DiCarlo said earlier this month.

More specialized work, including rubberizing the concrete inside the park, as well as work on the gazebo roof, is planned for next week, with the park planned to reopen on May 5.

Come on Brian, tell the news....Denise said she didn't think volunteers would be allowed due to specialized work and liability concerns. Somehow, us same residents built the whole thing 16 years ago but now this is concerns.
Lets try reporting what this really is........I campaign issue. If we don't volunteer, she will take all the credit......mark my words. Shame really, its not about the town and its residents, its about elections, reelections and control.

That's true - those concerns were raised earlier, but it may be less of an issue now because they've gone with scaffolding vs. a bunch of 10- or 15-foot ladders. There's another meeting on it tomorrow, and we'll know then.

TOTAL I agree with you, denise will vote no for the sunoco settlement that will cost us taxpayers $900 more a year than if settled vrs $87 a year in order to take glory in the revitalization of the playground. the residents like myself who helped build the field of dreams, there was no legal concerns and her husbands employer did not donate. However sunoco donated money for the palyground and coastal donated toward the ballfields. If she wasn't on the committee guaranteed johnson mathey would never ever donate 1 dime towards it.It's a political ploy which of course won't help. She's through at the end of the year

HATERS HATERS EVERYWHERE! Why don't we turn down free money and labor to fix up something for the kids, because we don't like a someone. How about if we just close field of dreams since we can't afford to bring up to code with out the monies. that we won't have to hear about how Denise got someone other than taxpayers to foot the bill. Why do you care so much about where the money came from anyway? If they want to buy a new air supply truck for a local fire dept. should we turn that down too? The hate needs to stop.

I would like to add my three cents worth. I don't think that johnson-mathey would have donated a nickel if it wasn't for dicarlo being on the committee. If that was the case why didn't they do it before she got picked.Explain that to me.by the way I don't hate denise dicarlo but if it's pay to play she's looking for and it seems that way, then she should be hated for what she's doing. Why wasn't the field of dreams kept up after all these years.Oh i forgot the township was too much in debt to pay for the upkeep.Ken were you there 16 years ago when it was being built.probably not.Guaranteed she will take full kudos for this and forget the people that will help with the fixup

I was here, born raised and refuse to leave, and i helped and donated there are bricks and pickets there to prove it. And in January it was stated that this was being worked on and put together before she was placed on the committee. and how does JH rebuilding a park constitute pay-to-play? the parks dept. has no help we keep laying off people to streamline things. how are 3 rangers expected to monitor all of the parks? we have like 4 people to mow all the lawns. but please instead of looking to better WD lets keep bashing people.

ken, bashing people and calling out the truth are two very different things. This plan only came to be this year, after Mrs Dicarlo was selected (not elected) to be on the Township Committee. The parks are not even her department, the trash trucks are.
