Firefighters Make Quick Work of Marple Farm Fire

A basement woodpile fire was brought under control in short order Friday.

A small fire in a basement woodpile made for a lot of smoke, but no damage, as firefighters from all four West Deptford companies and Woodbury quickly knocked down a blaze at Marple Farm off Jessup Road Monday afternoon.

The fire's cause is still under investigation, but Thorofare Fire Company Chief Phil Zimm said it was sparked in the pile, which is several feet away from a cast-iron stove used to heat the brick-and-stone farmhouse.

Zimm said the fire was under control shortly after the companies' arrival at the somewhat remote scene, a half-mile down a private dirt road off Jessup Road.

Though there was no damage and no injuries in the fire, a group of firefighters remained on scene to vent a large amount of smoke from the home.

Thank you to our outstanding citizens who volunteer to protect our lives and our property at grave danger to their own lives. In this case, particularly our firemen.
