Freshmen, Sophomore Eagles Win Playoff Openers
West Deptford football's freshmen and sophomore teams come away with wins in the quarterfinal round, while the junior team falls short at home.
The West Deptford freshmen and sophomore Eagles both took care of business in the quarterfinals of the TCMFL playoffs this weekend, winning their respective games to advance to the semifinals.
The freshmen led off the afternoon with a 25-12 victory over visiting Cumberland. Saleem Washington took the team on his back, recording 237 of the team's 319 yards of offense in the game. He scored three of the team's touchdowns, two of which were runs of 50-plus yards. Jamar Wallace added a fourth touchdown for the Eagles.
West Deptford's defense won the turnover battle on Saturday as well, forcing three Cumberland fumbles in the game. Wallace recovered two of the team's fumbles and Lawrence Howard pounced on the third. Alex Swietanski led the West Deptford defense with six tackles in the game.
The sophomore Eagles, meanwhile, continued to dominate their opposition this week, as they easily got past Clearview 26-6 in the second game of the afternoon. The victory was the ninth straight for a West Deptford club that hasn't lost since its opener against Penns Grove.
The junior Eagles weren't so lucky on Saturday, as they saw their season come to an end. They lost to a tough Kingsway Dragon team, 28-13, eliminating them from the junior bracket of the TCMFL playoffs.
The freshmen and sophomore Eagles will play in the semifinals this weekend. The freshmen Eagles, as the lowest remaining seed in their bracket, will be on the road the rest of the way. The will visit top-seeded Whitman Park this Sunday. The sophomores will host No. 8 seed Cumberland. Cumberland got to the semifinals by upsetting No. 3 Camden 19-6 on Sunday.
