No Bail Reduction for Alleged Paulsboro Murderer Daron Trent
The defendant in the November 2011 murder of Jamaal Barker was seeking to reduce his $750,000 bail.
A bail reduction was denied Friday for the alleged triggerman in the November 2011 murder of a Camden man in Paulsboro.
Daron Trent, 27, of Hamilton (Mercer), NJ, was seeking to have his $750,000 bail reduced, but after arguments from prosecutors and a description of the machine-gun killing, Superior Court Judge M. Christine Allen-Jackson denied that motion, ruling the bail figure is an appropriate amount.
Trent allegedly got out of a 2000 Lexus, which belongs to his girlfriend, on West Washington Street, pulled out a two-tone machine gun and shot Jamaal Barker, 25, a father of two, execution-style in what was Gloucester County’s third murder of 2011. Prosecutors said numerous spent bullet casings were found at the scene.
Trent was arrested about two weeks after the murder, after an investigation by the prosecutor's office, Paulsboro police and Mercer County Prosecutor's Office, with assistance from the U.S. Marshal's Trenton Task Force and the State Police.
Prosecutor’s Office Trial Chief Mary Pyffer called Trent a known gang member and said he’s a person of interest in other murders in Mercer County. Pyffer added Trent has been known to use at least three names and two social security numbers.
Trent was convicted in 2007 for theft and drug distribution, and Pyffer noted those convictions make him eligible for an extended sentence if convicted on any new charges.
Defense attorney Frank Trosky said the case against Trent is largely circumstantial and claimed his client “has no idea why he’s even here.”
