No Fireworks, Fourth of July Festival This Year at Cooper River Park

Officials said budget constraints put a lid on the events for the second year in a row.

For the second year in a row, fireworks won't light up the night sky above Pennsauken on the Fourth of July.

Until last year, the township held an annual fireworks display in conjunction with the "Let Freedom Rock Fest" at Cooper River Park.

But, because of budget constraints, there will be no fireworks again this year, Pennsauken Administrator Ed Grochowski said in an email.

In April 2011, Camden County officials announced that the Fourth of July rock concert at the park would not be held because money was tight.

That same month, the county laid off roughly 260 of its workers.

The county freeholder board had held the Independence Day concert at Cooper River Park in conjunction with Philadelphia radio station WMGK 102.9-FM for the previous decade.

WMGK decided to move the 2011 rock concert, which featured Yes and Styx, to the Susquehanna Bank Center on the Camden waterfront.

Unlike the Cooper River Park concert, it was not free.

This year, WMGK will hold a “Philly FREEdom Concert” on Tuesday, July 3 at XFINITY Live in Philadelphia, between the Wells Fargo Center and Citizens Bank Park.  As the name suggests, the event is free, and the featured performer is classic rocker Eddie Money. He’ll take the stage around 9 p.m.

Camden County hopes to revive the Cooper River Park event in the future, county spokesman Dan Keashen said. The "Let Freedom Rock Fest" cost the county about $125,000 each year, he said.

“It was a hallmark for the Fourth of July for residents,” Keashen said, adding that the freeholder board is actively seeking a corporate sponsor or sponsors to cover the cost of a future festival.

"The freeholder board is always looking for private-public partnerships to fund events," he said.

The county is sponsoring a series of free concerts and outdoor children’s movies this summer, including the Singer/Songwriter Series in Haddon Heights.

And, plenty of South Jersey towns have plans to light up the night sky for the Fourth of July this year. Go here for a list of area fireworks displays on or near the holiday.

I'd be curious to know what portion of that cost went to the clean up of all the garbage left behind by - I will say it nicely - PIGS. I went for a walk along the river the following day and could not get over the complete lack of consideration of people! There were 3 grass fires overnight because scumbags couldn't be bothered, and dumped their burning charcoal on the ground.

Hopefully the fireworks never come back to the park. We are broke as a state, broke at a county and cannot afford to staff the park police after midnight. Take care of priorities and clean up the male prostitution and drugs first and not worry about some nonsense fireworks display. Regardless of all that the fireworks at that park brings out the degenerates who cause nothing but problems.

Excuse me, One road town! Fireworks displays on the 4th of July are NOT nonsense. Fireworks do NOT bring out "degenerates who cause nothing but problems". And "cleaning up male prostitution and drugs" is a whole different issue and has nothing to do with fireworks. And fireworks are finished before midnight, so no need for park police after midnight on account of fireworks. Fireworks are a big part of July 4th celebrations and have been for almost forever. Don't be such a party pooper. If you don't like fireworks, then stay home. I hope they bring back fireworks to CooperRiver Park!

People, we've been able to stave off a Styx concert. We can do this if we pull together. We must stand strong. Styx hasn't put out any good music in decades, and they don't even have Dennis DeYoung's voice fronting the band. But now is not the time to let our guard down. A bombardment of crappy Stynx nostalgia-rock is just a season away. The more you know...

If anyone wants to think about it, our county freeloaders want to spend 5 million to
make some changes at the park that includes cutting vegetation on the banks. Never mind they spent money years ago to plant that stuff to keep the banks intact. How about this-don't spend the five million and spend a few thousand a staff at least one roving Park Police vehicle at night and maintain adequate, clean porta potties so that walkers/joggers don't have to pee on the grass??
Where our priorities? The freeloaders should think about the basics first-right?
Everytime I drive by the junklot that used to be the Pennsauken Mart, it warms my heart to know that millions of taxpayer dollars went to create that beautiful (not)
open space..

The Freedom concert might have attracted a lot of rowdy poor element. But fireworks attract mostly families. Fireworks are and have been a major part of 4th of July celebrations in our country for many, many years. In the past few years, I have gone to the Cooper River Park --- on the Collingswood/Haddon Township side of the river --- and it was all family oriented. The only bad part was that the stupid concert on the other side went overtime, and the children waiting on the Collingwsood side to see the fireworks got tired and some families had to leave before the fireworks show. So now there is no concert ---- but please bring back the fireworks. Cooper River Park is a perfect place for families to gather and see the fireworks. There is plenty of space. Families would bring chairs and blankets to sit on. And there never was any problem on this side of the river. No drinking, no rowdiness, no garbage - nothing bad. SO SKIP THE CONCERT - JUST BRING BACK THE FIREWORKS. Thanks.

Matt ---- what a party-pooper you are! Fireworks are nice to see no matter how many times you see them. And how about the new kids that haven't seen fireworks yet???? Fireworks have been a celebration of our nation's birthday for almost forever. And Cooper River Park is the perfect place because there is so much area for parking on both sides of the river, whereas the small towns have limited parking. I hope they bring fireworks back to Cooper River Park next year ---- but NO concert.

All I can say is we sat for almost 3 hours waiting for the fireworks. After the rowdy bunch up on the hill had everyone running to their cars, we again waited. Little kids running around patiently waiting. We waited for the concert to be over, now it is 11PM and hear over the loud speaker that the fireworks were cancelled. I knew it was because the police decided that they could not control the rowdies and the only way to disperse was to cancel. What a shame, this was the first time to the Riverfront to see the fireworks and didn't see anything but fighting and teens with no home training. The police should have been more prepared and had the area blocked off. There were no police until later that evening and the lone security guard got paid to walk back and forth since he did not know anything or when the fireworks were to start. Camden has deteriorated to the lowest of low which is a shame for the people there that ARE trying to survive. Ms. Disapointed

There are still plenty of townships that host annual fireworks events. They were going on all week. Collingswood, Audobon, Berlin, Cherry Hill, Haddon Heights, Haddonfield, etc. We enjoy them.

I have no opinion of the concerts since I really never attended them- not really my scene. But never have I heard (and not on this article per se but site wide) a bigger group of people who just love to complain.
Yes, we'd all like our taxes to be lowered, yes we need to clean up drugs and crime, etc. This is not new. These have always been issues and probably always will be. What are YOU doing about these issue, besides complaining on internet websites?
Hating on family fireworks events? Really? If you don't like them, don't go. Some people actually like to get out and live and enjoy life and not just sit home complaining day in and day out about everything.
If you are really that unhappy with the town that you live in, or the state that you live in for that matter, you have 3 choices, do nothing and continue to whine and be miserable, try to do something about it, or move out!

In the words of a Patch regular.... "Just care I do..."

My family and I went to Haddon Township and saw a wonderful display on the third. As their show was ending we could see another starting in the distance. From my home in Gloucester Township on the fourth, we could see the fireworks from Clementon Park plus two other towns. There were plenty of well done fireworks shows to go to throughout the region outside of Cooper River Park.

before money is spent on fireworks, our county and municipal budgets need to be flush. they aren't.

skip the parades, fireworks and other "christmas tree" items until the economy picks up and tax revenues are stable.
