Prosecutor: Teen Brothers Strangled Autumn Pasquale

The brothers, ages 15 and 17, are charged with first-degree murder.

Two teenage brothers lured 12-year-old Autumn Pasquale into their house, strangled her and then dumped her body in a recycling bin, authorities said Tuesday afternoon.

The Clayton, Gloucester County, girl had been missing since about 12:30 p.m. Saturday, when she left home on her white BMX Odyssey bicycle. After a relentless two-day search, her body was found in the bin outside a Clayton home late Monday night.

Authorities on Tuesday arrested the brothers—ages 15 and 17—who live about five blocks from Pasquale's home. During a news conference in Clayton on Tuesday afternoon, Gloucester County Prosecutor Sean Dalton declined to release their identities because of their ages.

They each are charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, disposing of a body, tampering with evidence and theft. Additionally, the 15-year-old was charged with luring.

The teens lured the girl into their home by telling her they had parts for her bicycle, according to the prosecutor.

An autopsy performed Tuesday morning showed Pasquale died of blunt force trauma consistent with strangulation, according to Dalton. He said there was no indication Pasquale was sexually assaulted.

The teen's mother contacted authorities after seeing a Facebook post from one of her sons regarding Pasquale, Dalton said. He declined to elaborate.

Authorities executed a search warrant Tuesday at the teenagers' home.

"The search recovered personal belongings of Autumn's in the juveniles' residence," including her bicycle, Dalton said.

Dalton said his office may seek to try the teens as adults. A detention hearing for the juveniles is expected to take place Wednesday in Family Court in Woodbury.

The case attracted media from as far away as New York to the small borough. In addition to dozens of members of the media, several Clayton residents also attended Tuesday's press conference. Some of them wiped away tears as Dalton provided the grisly details of Pasquale's death.

Dalton credited local residents for banding together to help in the search for Pasquale.

"Today we mourn the loss of a young girl whose life was tragically cut short before it even began," Dalton said. "I know a lot of you are angry, and you have a right to be angry. At this point, we need to put anger aside. We have to let justice take its course."

How does a mother not know her what her underage sons are doing / have done in their own home? Parental presence, supervision, knowing where your child is and is not alone at all times, is part of parenting. If there were previous problems with these boys, then all the more reason why parental supervision was necessary and would have prevented this tragedy.

''TRUE"...but many parents have to work now and too many children are left alone to their own devices. I also have to think that something was needed in the mental health of those boys, else why such a violent and horrific happening? BUT, I also, in my long long life, known irresponsible parents.......for whatever reason??? Perhaps they had a bad growing up experience??? Who knows?

My heart is totally 1,000 % broken. I can't believe it. I can not comprehend how anyone can raise two children with such a lack of humanity.I try to see the light and I see the God truly exists and he made these evil, souless idoits stupid enough to post it on FB where there mother could see it and turn them in. I will not comment on the mother but to say I think the reward had something to do with it. I will also say I do not see where race enters this picture. Bad parents come in all races and creeds.

the fact that the "teens" race was omitted from the report is whats relevant. If the races were reversed I don't think it would be (ie. Zimmermen) and the MSM and the other race-baiters would make this national news for months. wheres the hate crime charge? now feel free to insert liberal name calling...."your a racist, hater, nazi, kkk member" ect ect

I read elsewhere that the older boy attends the Bankbridge School, which is for special needs children. Nothing will ever make sense of this terrible tragedy, but there's no need to rush to judgement regarding the mother. Theres time to form informed opinions...so no need to add fuel to a fire that's going to burn for decades.

I would not venture to speculate on the mothers motives but to say that it is just fortunate that she did turn her sons in and is cooperating with the investigation.

From what I am reading, she is a single, working mother of 3 teenage sons. While I am certainly not suggesting that she is mother of the year by any means, how many parents, even very good ones, know where their 17 year olds are "at all times".

In any event, it is an epic tragedy that has taken one young life and ripped apart two families.

I wouldn't venture to speculate that it was just fortunate that she turned her sons in considering the fact that a murder took place in her home where she is responsible for her sons actions. Reward, fear of being part of a murder conspiracy or fortunate, we will never know. Parenting isn't suppossed to be easy. Making it a priority effort to try and keep track of where their 17 year olds are (and who is looking out for them) at all times is far easier than living through a tragedy like this.

Very sad to hear this kind of murder, so young my heart goes out to her family. These teens should be tried as adults and given the death penalty!

They will likely be tried as adults. However, unfortunately, the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that states cannot execute criminals who were convicted of crimes they committed before they were 18. Also, New Jersey has outlawed the death penalty for all cases by law. This has been on the books since 2007. Also, this year, the Supreme Court also ruled that minors cannot be given mandatory life sentences witout parole. What a shame I say!

This was such a horrible tragedy. My condolences go out to Autumn's family, friends, and the community of Clayton. The entire world had been hoping she would be found alive --but that was not the case. I had been following Autumn's disappearance on the Daily Mail website which is from London, England. There is so much sorrow for such a senseless death of a beautiful child.

Patch should update their article given that this is proably the top story in South Jersey today. The names of the teen brothers have been released as well as their photos by other news organizations.
This is a horrible and senseless tragedy. We can only imagine what this family is going through right now. Let's hope that they can find strength and comfort during all of what they will have to endure. And once again, an evil act in the world has shown us all that we need to hold our kids a little closer and tighter today.

Mr. B, it is Patch's policy not to release the names of juveniles charged in crimes, regardless of what other media outlets are doing. However this story we published late last night should offer you plenty of insight into the teens' identities:

According to another news article, a citizen tip was made BEFORE the mother called police, and that the tip was not followed up on. This was quoted from Autumn's parents in an ABC news article. This citizen apparently thought that the abandoned house (location of Autumn's body) was suspicious, told police - now the alleged murderers mother is being credited with turning her boys in to police coincidentally it seems after she may have known that a citizen tried to direct the police to the murder site.

PatLB, I'm curious as to how you jumped to your apparent conclusion that the mother, "...may have known that a citizen tried to direct the police to the murder site." Was the other news article you refer to published before the mother turned in her sons? Even if it was, did the mother read the article before she turned in her sons? From the information that appears to be clearly known, the mother saw the post the Facebook post of one of the sons and based on it contacted the police.

"Abandoned house"??? I thought it was the home of the boys and that the Mother, upon seeing evidence or whatever in the house then called police or turned her boys in? Am I not getting it right?

Something is drastically wrong in our society today as more and more young children are involved in serious crimes. Is it a lack of proper parenting? Or is it that they are exposed to too much violence on TV and those games I see my grandsons playing? So many of those things show violent acts as if it was acceptable. There's lots more I could add but I can just see the responses I'd get so will leave it as it is.

Nancy, violence has been around for decades on TV. To blame the actions of murderous acts on anyone or anything but the perp is absolutely insane. It is that type of thought that has brought us here, a world where no one is responsible for their actions and no one should pay the full price for those actions. There is only one answer, wipe from the face of the Earth these types of individuals so they can NEVER harm another person. I can only hope their time in jail is spent in the showers being gang-raped or quickly dispatched by a jail house shiv.

My thoughts and prayers for the victim and her family. Nancy, you are absolutely right. I hear and see people letting toddlers as young as 2 or 4 let alone teens be bombarded by "the walking dead" type movies, shows and games. Unfortunately our primitive species hasn't figured out the we monkeys often see and the think it's ok to do. We would be better served to outlaw these shows, games and other forms of media if we won't or can't keep our children safe from these horrible ideas and visions. Can't we see what all the violence, long going on with our help installing evil dictators for our own monetary gain, has done to the mind set of those in the middle east? I guess are "leaders" are gearing us up for a big sick fight.

Where do we draw the line on such censorship and outlawing Mr. Clark? Do we eliminate anything whatsoever that may adversely effect children, or adults for that matter, from formulating horrible ideas? And, just who are the arbiters of such decisions?

When I was under 12 in the city where I was born, children under THAT age were not allowed to see certain movies and the rules were inforced....but even then, little girls were found in some cellar or whatever, sexually abused and killed. That left such emormous feeling w me that to this day I can't forget it.....therefore, even when my daughter was 15 and walked to a friends house in a different section of town, I had her call me when she arrived.....and, as a teen, said when she called, "Mom, I'm alive!"....sarcasm.......perfect teen response...but...when she had kids of her own she understood and is now a Grandmother of four. It's a shame that it's only gotten worse.

You can't tell me that two teenage boys who ate capable of such a horrific act did not show signs of anti-social or sociopathic behavior in the past. All too often, children and teens exhibit signs for years and years that they would be capable of such things and it either goes unnoticed or untreated. It's very scary to think that a neighbor could be so sick on the inside, and innocent passersby in the neighborhood have no idea until something so heinous happens.

I'm so sorry for the grief this family has endured. Bless her young soul.
Like another poster stated .... Though this mother may or may not be mom of the year ... It had to be gutwrenching to realize this heinous crime was at the hands of ur kids. Thank God she did turn them in and not take the "my kids do no wrong" stance.
But God bless the family and friends of this little Angel.

Back in the 80s in toms river a little girl age 13 was also murdered and thrown in a creek like trash. Her murderer Shawn Milne was 15. He was tried as an adult but only got 30yrs in prison. He will be out of prison soon..i hope and pray that these evil brothers get life and never get to walk free again. These poor parents just lost their precious daughter and are raw right now but this pain they feel will be raw for mañy years to come as they sit thru a murder trial and listen to the public defenders actually defend such scum (i often wonder how they sleep) i ask that the community stand with this family and support them thru many years of grief ahead of them. God bless them and hold them in his arms,

Time to reinstate capital punishment and make it available in all crimes that involve a death. Deterrent is the only answer. Even if these two scumbags would not have been deterred by it the next guy who reads about their grisly execution by electric chair might think twice. Put a few of these executions on the internet and watch the crime rate drop.

Even if the death penalty were reinstated, these two monsters are too young to be executed; there's a nationwide ban on executing those under 18. A mother turned in her 17 year old son who is the murderer of 10 year old Jessica Ridgeway of Colorado. Colorado does have the death penalty but the 17 year old is too young to be executed. Personally, I am against the death penalty, life in prison without the chance of parole is a fitting punishment. Will these murderous teens even get that punishment? Doubtful. I just feel so sorry for the parents and relatives of these murdered children, it's a horror beyond comprehesnion. Deep condolences to all of the victims.

WD and just whom is supposed to 'decide' what people are the 'scum of the earth'.. those people who don't care enough and don't 'teach and spend time with' their children are partly to blame...some are so worn out with trying to make a living...THERE ARE MANY REASONS......BUT...your post was too extreme...are you going to be one of those who decides?? Would surely hope not, with your attitude.
