WD School Board Prepares for Transition Into 2013
Long-time board members James Mehaffey and Donald Hicks participated in the final school board meeting of their respective terms on Dec. 17.
The turning over of a new calendar year also marks the end of an era on the West Deptford school board.
Former school board president James Mehaffey and long-time board member Donald Hicks are both leaving their positions when their terms expire at the end of December. Both participated in their final Board of Education meeting on Dec. 17.
It is the end of a particularly long run for Mehaffey, who is a long-time West Deptford resident as well as the former chief of police in town. During his final board meeting, he thanked his fellow members for all of the hard work that they had put in over the years to make West Deptford schools better.
Board President Chris Strano thanked both of the men for dedication to the children of West Deptford over the years as well as to the schools.
“What many people don't realize is that this is a volunteer position,” said Strano. “They both dedicated a lot of time and hard work to serving our children and the community.”
Stepping in to fill the vacant positions on the board come Jan. 2 will be David Kline and Thomas Lee. The two ran uncontested in the Nov. 6 election and were elected to three-year terms. Current board member Peter Guzzeti was also re-elected in November and will be sworn into his new term on Wednesday as well. Guzzeti originally joined the board in 2011 and will serve his first full three-year term beginning next month.
The re-organization meeting is on Wednesday, Jan. 2 at 7 p.m. The board acknowledged that they accidentally advertised the re-organization meeting as Jan. 3 previously and have confirmed the correct date.
