West Deptford’s baseball team got its chance to play on the big stage at Campbell’s Field against Penns Grove Friday, and the players brought drama to match the setting.

Harry Sturgis belted the game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh inning to score Chris Dellaquilla, as the Eagles staged a late rally to top Penns Grove, which had taken the lead in the top of the inning.

Tom Jakubowski, who tripled earlier in the game, tied it up with some smarts at the plate and on the basepaths—after drawing a leadoff walk, he stole second and third, then charged home on a throwing error.

Penns Grove had taken the lead, 3-2, after getting to Paul Angert in the top of the inning. Angert had given up two runs in the first, but settled down to shut out the Red Devils over the next five innings, before being chased with two outs in the seventh.

West Deptford reliever Zach Moran ended up with the win, getting out of the seventh with a strikeout after the Eagles allowed just the one run to Penns Grove.

Besides the game-winning hit, Sturgis also had a key sacrifice fly in the fifth to score Brandon McCall and tie the game, after the Eagles had struggled to move runners through the first four innings.

The win moves West Deptford within two games of .500 at 7-9.
