West Deptford Boys' XC Topples Heights for First Time Since 2001

The Eagles raced in packs to score the upset victory.

Haddon Heights had the fastest runner on the day at Pennypacker Park, but even that wasn't enough to hold off a hard-charging West Deptford boys' cross-country squad that scored the upset victory Tuesday.

The Garnets' Chris Gandolfo-Lucia turned in a 16:38 to win out among all runners, but the Eagles' Ray Parsons was only a second behind him—and the rest of the Eagles came in waves after that to secure the 22-36 win, the first by a West Deptford boys' cross-country team against Heights in 11 years.

Kevin Cianfarini (17:05), Jon Ladner (17:09) and Dale Johnson (17:10) were the first pack across to go 3-4-5 against Heights, and Matt Shinkle (18:11), Mitchel Wiliczek (18:14) and Andrew Kilpatrick (18:23) rounded out the victory.

The Eagles weren't so fortunate against perennial power Haddonfield, which swept spots two through eight to get the 20-43 win.

The watershed victory over Haddon Heights comes just days after the Eagles finished 12 th in the annual Paul Short Run at Lehigh University, where Parsons finished 21 st among all runners in the division.

West Deptford Girls' Cross-Country

Millie Kipp continued her journey back from multiple foot injuries last year, racing to a third place overall in the quad meet in 20:22, just behind Haddonfield's Shelby Cain. That time comes on the heels of Kipp's performance at the South Jersey Open this weekend, where she was 23rd, in a time of 22:02.
