West Deptford School Board OKs $425K for Oakview Roof

Work on the elementary school's roof should begin within the next two weeks.

Roofers should be at work at Oakview Elementary within the next two weeks, after the West Deptford school board unanimously approved a bid Monday to replace most of the school’s out-of-warranty rubber roof.

The board OK’ed at $424,480 bid from Vineland-based J. Wilhelm Roofing Company, the low bidder among about a half-dozen roofing companies to bid on the project.

It was actually the second round of bidding on the roof project, after another low bidder in the original round failed to include all the specifications, business administrator William Thompson said.

Replacement of the bulk of the roof was a priority for school administrators, given its deteriorating condition. While the roof is only 19 years old and would’ve normally been covered under warranty, a botched seal job done under a former facilities director voided that warranty, superintendent Kevin Kitchenman said.

With a purchase order set to go on the work, Thompson said the work can begin as soon as the roofers are ready.

“We want to get it done before the school year starts,” he said.
