West Deptford Sports Wrap: Softball Slips by Audubon

The Eagles handed the Green Wave a 4-0 loss; meanwhile, the boys' tennis team's struggles continued.

After an afternoon nearly devoid of hitting, West Deptford's softball team scored the game-winning run on a passed ball in a 4-0 win over Audubon Friday.

Sydney Ponto barreled home on ball that glanced off the catcher’s glove, and Marissa Linquist scored on another passed ball, to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead early on, as both teams struggled to get baserunners against overpowering pitching on the afternoon.

West Deptford later added insurance runs after loading the bases on a pair of bunts that spun along the chalk and died just inside the baselines.

Ponto, who allowed just three hits, struck out 14 batters on the afternoon, while Audubon’s Hunter Urban struck out 11—but also gave up nine walks.

Boys’ tennis

First singles Kai Narayanan was the only West Deptford player to draw blood, winning the Eagles’ only game of the match, as Haddonfield dominated Friday, winning second singles through second doubles in straight, 6-0 sets.
