AMC Renews 'Comic Book Men' for Second Season

Any details about possible changes remain sparse, but the show, filmed at Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash, is coming back.

Everyone's favorite Red Bank-based comic book reality television show, Comic Book Men, is coming back for a second season, AMC recently announced. Walt Flanagan, manager of Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash, and one-fourth of the star power behind the reality show, confirmed Wednesday evening at the comic shop that the Kevin Smith-developed show is coming back, but that he's unaware of any finer details AMC has planned. The shop, where the reality TV show is filmed, is located in downtown Red Bank, Monmouth County.  Comic Book Men's first season consisted of six one-hour episodes that revolved around the shop and the exploits of real friends and (sometime) employees of the Stash: Walt Flanagan, Bryan Johnson, Ming Chen and Mike Zapcic. …

The band will get set for Memorial Day and beyond starting this week.

The West Deptford High School music department submitted the following news release: Coming off its second consecutive season as Atlantic Coast Champions, the West Deptford High School Marching Band is getting ready to launch their 2012 season. On Tuesday, May 1, the band will hold what it refers to as its 2012 Kick-off Rehearsal. West Deptford Little Theatre Gets Tentative OK to Move to Green-Fields

The school board gave approval, pending a signed agreement specifying requirements for the use of the school this summer.

Several years after a disastrous run at the high school, including a fire during a production, the West Deptford Little Theatre program could be back in the district for the summer. After close to an hour of heated debate on the topic, the West Deptford school board tentatively approved, in an 8-1 vote Monday night, the organization’s use of Green-Fields Elementary for this year’s run, pending a signed agreement of terms. “As you can see, there’s still apprehension,” school board President Christopher Strano told Little Theatre director and vice-president Laura Trace and treasurer Bill Bennett, who came out to speak on behalf of the organization. For their part, Trace and Bennett emphasized the shift in leadership and a desire to repair—at…

As a resident of the Green-Fields community and a close neighbor to the school, I look forward to the summer when the traffic and speeding cars in the neighborhood finally die down. It does not come as good news that this summer there will be continued activity as well as out-of-towners driving down these roads again. Sure wish the residents could have a say on this decision.   more ›

Report: Christie Snoozed During Springsteen Show

The governor apparently nodded off during a Bruce Springsteen concert in New York City.

Bruce Springsteen's high-energy shows are known to inspire fervor in his audiences.  But, apparenty Gov. Christopher J. Christie was running a little low on energy at a recent concert by The Boss at Madison Square Garden in New York City, according to a report on The Huffington Post.   A fan sent in a photo of Christie resting his head in his hand, apparently napping during the show, the New York Post reports.  The governor is a longtime fan of The Boss. Last month Christie attended what he said was his 127th Springsteen concert, at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.  Christie's name has been tossed around as a potential running mate for Mitt Romney in next year's presidential election. Last year, Christie mulled his own presidential …

D’oh!: Simpsons’ Springfield Not in Jersey

Matt Groening spills the beans on home state of fictional Springfield.

Worst pop culture geography reveal ever?  Since The Simpsons started airing, the state hosting its dysfunctional hamlet Springfield has been both a mystery and a running joke. After decades of hints and misinformation, the mystery and hilarity over the statehood of the Simpson’s Springfield crescendo-ed in a quick visual gag in The Simpsons Movie showing the four states that border Springfield: Ohio, Nevada, Maine and Kentucky. That joke came on the heels of a national promotional contest in 2007 where towns named Springfield from across America competed in a chance to be declared the Simpsons’ hometown. Springfield, N.J., residents made a fun video recreating the show's opening credits for a contest for which Springfield would host the …

Prayers and the Promise

Facing the biggest "wrecking ball" of his life, my brother believes faith will be rewarded. Bruce Springsteen told him so.

“For the ones who had a notion, A notion deep inside, That it ain't no sin to be glad you're alive.” I remember a time, when I was a little girl, that my brother Mark was very sick. Mark was my first brother, and at the time the youngest in the family. We were born one-two-three, the tag team of myself and Gina born a year apart, and Mark coming a few years later. So at the time I’m remembering, he was about three or four, and I was in first or second grade. I don’t remember the details, or maybe I never knew them. I just remember getting off the bus from St. Patrick’s and rushing into the house to share my day. My mom, in a sharp voice, told me to hush. My brother was in her bedroom, sick, and Gina and I would have to be quiet that day. I…

Mark, When I heard the news about your battle with cancer last night from my sister, a flood of memories of you immediately stormed my mind. I began thinking about times we spent together, stories you shared with me, and the way you showed me how to be a fierce competitor on two separate playing fields and in the game of life. After all of these years I saw your picture and I realized that one …   more ›

Reality TV Comes to Gloucester County

Battling pit bulls and baseball bat-wielding men, "Repo Games" co-host Josh Lewis dishes on filming the reality show in South Jersey.

A few local South Jersey residents will have their 15 minutes of reality TV fame in upcoming weeks—though some probably wish the outcome was a bit different. Last fall, Spike TV brought its reality series, Repo Games, to New Jersey for the first time. The show filmed a number of episodes locally, including in Paulsboro, Wenonah and Gloucester Township. Repo Games, a mix of game show and reality TV, is perhaps an inevitable sign of the times: entertainment and the economy wrapped into one program. Co-hosts Josh Lewis and Tom DeTone travel to different areas of the country and go to homes of people who are in danger of having their vehicles repossessed. The hosts play a trivia game with the car owners. Answer at least three out of five …

Prescription: Dance

Green-Fields student Matthew Mason taps his way to titles.

As she watched her son take the stage at Cathy Roe’s Ultimate Dance Competition in February, Cyndi Taylor fought back tears. “I was a nervous wreck,” Taylor admitted. “He was dance number twelve, and I cried all through dance number eleven. I was so scared for him.” She needn’t be. Taylor's son, 9-year-old Matthew Mason, took the stage with confidence and did a rousing tap number to a mash-up of two versions of “Runaround Sue.” As the audience applauded, Matthew came off stage and told his mother, “Mommy, I nailed it!” Apparently the judges agreed. Matthew, a fourth-grader at Green-Fields Elementary School, won the title of “Junior Mr. Ultimate Dance” that afternoon, a moment he calls the highlight of his dance career. That “career” …
