Hi everyone! I am new to the Patch. I live here in South Jersey and write a blog about our beloved Garden State.
On my website I take you on a journey along South Jersey and beyond its borders. I offer things to do that are unique, sometimes educational, and can be done with the family. I have a 1-year-old who I trek with on all of these adventures.
Here is a recent article I published on my blog. I hope you enjoy. I am trying to offer something a bit different in our South Jersey area and to let folks know that there's a lot to do!
Soupy Island, Thorofare, NJ ~ Generation after generation of enjoyment
Soupy Island is a bizarre yet wonderful place surrounded by barbed wire. Nestled on the end of a dead end street, it sits among quiet residential homes.
I have lived in the Philadelphia vicinity all my life and can’t believe I have never heard of this place. It’s more like a local “hush hush” secret. An old grammar school friend had brought it up to me.
I was immediately intrigued and had to check it out. Generation after generation has enjoyed Soupy Island over the last 100 years.

This was a wonderful article and the photos were terrific. Soupy Island is a West Deptford gem and I hope it continues to be recognized and maintained for the historical perspective it offers on South Jersey and West Deptford. (What would we ever have done without Campbell's Soup???!!) :-)

Kathleen, Thank you very much. I try and show folks that there is a lot of great offerings we have here in South Jersey. I also try promote and seek things that aren't the most typical, unique, and educational. I am ALWAYS here to support our local places and businesses. Thank you for reading!

Thank you for the lovely article. A former workmate of mine used to tell me about being rounded up along with the rest of the kids in her neighborhood and taken to Soupy Island. This was in the late 1950s-early 1960s. She never could remember where it was. Now I know.

Shirley, it is still a wonderful place for kids as well as adults. It is crazy that a trust fund set aside over 120 years ago is still keeping this place running and free to all. Soupy Island is our local best-kept secret. Thank you for sharing your friend's memory with us! Thank you for reading as well!

Is he Merry go Round still there? I'm probably older than you ladies but I do remember the history of Soupy Island. They used to bring kids over from Phila.by ferry and have a grand old time.
From some the stories I've been told by local folks older than me from the area it was awesome. Is it still in good shape? If not, I would love to see it revitalized and handicap friendly, I bet the Historical Society could get a grant if it needs any work. What a great day for children with disabilities. Wouldn't it be nice for it to be open all summer. I'll have to go by and visit again, been years since I was there. Nice Post Dee.
