The Stranger I Met Today

Sometimes a purse is just a purse. But every so often, you catch a glimpse of a bag that prompts the Hallelujah chorus.

Recently, I attended a dinner held for local businesses that were acknowledged as “Best Of” in particular categories. I was invited by my friend, Hannah, who had won in one of the fitness categories. I was honored to be part of her special night.

I was walking back into the ballroom and passed a woman who was holding an absolutely beautiful bag. It was gorgeous. It had a distressed, ostrich leather exterior. I didn’t get close enough to see whether it was real leather or faux because I didn’t want to be the odd woman at the “Best Of” ceremony, examining this woman’s purse as though it was a relic from a Dan Brown book. It was a perfect medium-sized boxy tote. The muted color matched the shade of morning fog that rises from the surface of a lake and it rocked an elegant silver buckle and some subtle silver accent beading. Seriously, this purse was art.  I couldn’t tell you what this woman looked like or what she was wearing, but I would be able to accurately describe this purse to a police sketch artist if asked.

When I complimented the woman on her purse, she looked down briefly, mumbled something that could’ve been thanks, and walked away.

Lesson Learned

If you’re lucky enough to sport an accessory that is nothing less than noteworthy, when someone compliments you for it, look them in the eye and thank them, your voice emanating confidence and superiority. Don’t look down at the bag, unsure of what you’ve got or give a timid thanks and motion the bag like a ragdoll at the person sharing their appreciation (and envy). As an owner of something so exquisite, you have a responsibility. Know what you’ve got on your arm and flaunt it.
