Achieve New Year Resolutions with Free Life-Skills Workshops at GCC

Deptford Twp. – The Center for People in Transition at Gloucester County College is offering an assortment of personal finance, healthy living and wellness workshops during the month of January. “Financial Considerations for Job Changers” — Financial Advisor Monique Castillo will lend guidance to participants transitioning between jobs by clarifying changes in retirement plans, insurance, benefits, taxable effects, savings and emergency funds. The pros and cons of the options that someone faces transitioning between jobs will also be explored. It meets Tuesday, Jan. 7 from 7 to 9 p.m.

“Resume Life-Skills Workshop” — Nancy L. Hawn, M.S., NJAPM, will discuss the purpose of a resume and language essential to grabbing an employer’s attention as well as common mistakes and how to avoid them. During the two-hour workshop, resumes will be reviewed in an open forum, prompting a stress-free exchange of ideas and constructive criticism. All participants must have a resume to attend. An associate from the Center for People in Transition will be available to help individuals put together a draft prior to the workshop via the Personal Data Form, obtained by emailing nhawn@gccnj.edu. Forms must be completed by Monday, Jan. 6. The workshop meets Monday, Jan. 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. This workshop is sponsored by the Heart of Gloucester County.

“Financial Aspects of Divorce” — Joseph Johnson, owner of
Main Street Financial, will explain a broad range of monetary issues that individuals face when going through divorce. This workshop is designed to help individuals avoid costly mistakes, clarify expectations and begin planning for a “successful” divorce. It meets Tuesday, Jan. 14 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

“How to Wear Your Ruby Slippers: Growing Self-Confidence” — Certified Professional Life Coach Sharon Roth-Lichtenfeld will teach individuals how to find their inner strengths and determine core values to overcome times of stress and adversity. This workshop includes strategies and exercises to boost self-confidence. It meets Wednesday, Jan. 15 from 7 to 9 p.m.

“Divorce Beyond Emotions: Financial Perspective” — Financial Advisor Monique Castillo will offer advice to protect one’s financial interests before, during and after divorce. She will also provide an actionable checklist and booklet summarizing key concepts to keep all participants on track after the workshop. It meets Thursday, Jan. 16 from 7 to 9 p.m.

“How to Avoid Costly Housing Mistakes Before, During and After Divorce” — RE/MAX Connection Agent Brian Ziegenfuss will explain how to protect one’s desired interest in the sale of a home and to maximize profits. Issues of lifestyle changes, new budgets and housing affordability will also be addressed. It meets Wednesday, Jan. 22 from 7 to 9 p.m.

“Everything Elder Legal Clinic” — Victoria M. Dalton, Esq., will provide legal information in an array of areas that are most important to senior citizens. Individuals are welcome to bring their lunches and join Dalton as she answers all their questions relating to elder needs. It meets Thursday, Jan. 23 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. 

“Intermediate Computers” — Workshop facilitator Tina Chappelear will conduct this 40-hour introductory course on the Microsoft Office Suite. Topics include how to use the Word, Excel and PowerPoint applications. It costs $40 for displaced homemakers and $100 for non-displaced homemakers. Sessions are held Thursday evenings Jan. 23 through May 1 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. No class will be held March 13. 

“Women, Money and Power” — According to Financial Advisor Monique Castillo, 90 percent of all women will be solely responsible for their finances at some point in their lives. This presentation offers strategies to plan for financial security. It meets Monday, Jan. 27 from 7 to 9 p.m. This workshop is sponsored by the Women’s Leadership Council of United Way of Gloucester County.
