GCC DMS Program Earns Reaccreditation Through 2023

Deptford Twp. – The Gloucester County College Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) program has been reaccredited through 2023 by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

According to Program Director Michael Keith, the College has met the 67 standards set forth by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS) and the CAAHEP board of directors.

“Gloucester County College has had prior successful evaluations since the program started in 1994,” said Keith. “Because of this, we received accreditation for 10 years rather than five. The College is one of only 12 in the nation to receive this endorsement for 10 years.”

Keith collaborated closely with Susan Hall, dean of Allied Health and Nursing, and Laurie Rohrman, clinical coordinator, over an 18-month period. The committee primarily focused on curriculum requirements, appropriate staffing, laboratories and equipment.

GCC students must take a rigorous course load comprised of anatomy and physiology, cross-section anatomy, physics, ultrasound physics, sonographic interpretations, medical terminology, patient care and echocardiography. In addition, they must complete three clinical rotations.

“We work hard to maintain our accreditation,” said Keith. “It pays off. Our students continue to obtain jobs in the tri-state area even at medical institutions affiliated with other ultrasound programs.”

The College accepts 14 students annually into its DMS major, which is a selective-admissions program. For more information, call 856-415-2195.
