GCC Women's Soccer Team En Route to National Championship Tournament

Deptford Twp. – The Gloucester County College women’s soccer team captured the NJCAA Region XIX Championship title for the second consecutive year, defeating Ocean County College in a 1-0 shutout match, on Saturday, Oct. 26.

The lady Roadrunners are considered co-champions alongside Brookdale Community College since the NJCAA established two brackets in Region XIX for fall 2013. Both teams will advance to the National Championship Tournament in New York slated in early November.

“The women’s soccer team is currently ranked third in the country and we have been in the NJCAA top 10 all year,” said head coach Megan Ruttler. “This is partly due to our second place finish last year in the national tournament.”

Wrapping up the season with a 15-1 record, GCC has been on a hot streak, winning 11 consecutive games. Midfielder Liz Faulkner, of Clarksboro, scored the lone goal needed to best the OCC Vikings. Both colleges have vied against one another to capture the Region XIX crown for the last three years.

Guiding the Roadrunners are 10 returning sophomores, six of whom were recently named as All Region XIX players. Such include Devon Hoglen and Vanessa Brown, first team; Faulkner, Connor DeAngelis and Amber Scott, second team; and Shannon Logan, third team.

“Our Athletic Department has been nationally recognized for years. However, only last year did the women’s soccer program contribute to that recognition,” said Ruttler. “We are excited for the opportunity to represent the College at the highest level of competition.

“It will allow us to contribute to GCC’s ability to earn the NATYCAA Cup as the best two-year college athletic program in the nation.”
