Personal Finance, Legal and Computer-Skills Workshops Offered at GCC

Deptford Twp. – The Center for People in Transition at Gloucester County College hosts a number of personal finance, legal and computer-skills workshops during the month of May. All are free of charge unless otherwise noted. Call 856-415-2222 or email peopleintransition@gccnj.edu to register.

“Mediate Your Divorce” — Nancy Hawn, M.S., APFM, explains how a trained, neutral mediator can help married couples navigate all the decisions required in moving toward divorce. Mediators assist couples in resolving their differences and coming to an agreement, which saves significant time and money, and reduces everyone’s stress. It meets Monday, May 5 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

“Smart Women Finish Rich” — Joseph Johnson, owner of Main Street Financial, equips individuals with seven steps to plan for their financial security. These simple steps are designed to help participants figure out where they stand financially, improve their lives and put hard-earned money where their values are. It meets Monday, May 5 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

“Divorce Beyond Emotions: Financial Perspective” — Financial Advisor Monique Castillo offers advice to protect one’s financial interests before, during and after divorce. She also provides an actionable checklist and booklet summarizing key concepts to keep all participants on track after the workshop. It meets Tuesday, May 6 from 7 to 9 p.m.

“What is Your Yellow Brick Road? Creating the Roadmap to the Ideal You” — Certified Professional Life Coach Sharon Roth-Lichtenfeld provides advice to create a roadmap and navigate a pathway to happiness after divorce, separation or the death of a loved one. It meets Wednesday, May 7 from 7 to 9 p.m.

“The Why Behind the Buy” — Tiffany W. Thurman, CFPPE manager at FinanciallyHers at Clarifi, “unlocks the mystery” behind spending habits. Participants discover the motivations, roadblocks and subconscious beliefs that influence the ways in which they spend their money. It meets Wednesday, May 7 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

“Using Social Media for Job Searches” — Certified Microsoft Access Developer Lauri Kuder shares tips and tricks for using social media to navigate the job hunt. Platforms explored include Linked-In, Facebook and Twitter. Kuder also explains why faxing and emailing resumes are outdated approaches to getting one’s resume noticed. It meets Monday, May 12 from 5:45 to 8:30 p.m. This is sponsored by People in Transition and Heart of Gloucester County.

“Basic Computers – Mini Series” — Certified Microsoft Access Developer Lauri Kuder conducts this 20-hour basic computer-literacy course covering Microsoft Word 2013, and if time allows, Excel 2013. It costs $20 for displaced homemakers and $50 for non-displaced homemakers. Sessions are Wednesdays, May 14, 21, 28 and June 4 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The nonrefundable payment is due one week before class begins. 

 “The ‘New’ New Beginnings for Women” — Workshop Facilitator Deborah Makos-Trionfo guides individuals who are struggling with the loss of a loved one, divorce, unemployment, diminished health or eroding confidence on their journey to a happier future. During this eight-part series, participants discover new inspiration for changing the “script” of their lives. Individuals learn that they have the power to choose a happier experience, not only for tomorrow, but for every moment of their lives. It meets Monday and Thursday, May 19, 22, 29, June 2, 5, 9, 12 and 16 (no class May 26) from 7 to 9:30 p.m. This is sponsored by People in Transition and the Women’s Leadership Council of United Way of Gloucester County.

“Financial Aspects of Divorce” — Joseph Johnson, owner of Main Street Financial, explains a broad range of monetary issues that individuals face when going through divorce. Participants uncover tactics for avoiding costly mistakes, clarifying expectations and planning for a “successful” divorce. It meets Monday, May 19 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

“How to Run Your Household Like a Business” — Tiffany W. Thurman, CFPPE manager at FinanciallyHers at Clarifi, suggests common methods for creating budgets and spending plans based on individual lifestyles. It meets Wednesday, May 21 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

“Laws of Separation and Divorce” — Bruce Matez, Esquire, speaks on grounds for divorce, court procedures, alimony, equitable distribution, custody and visitation rights. It meets Thursday, May 22 from 7 to 9 p.m.

“Introduction to Medicaid for the Elderly” — John P. Ciocco, Esquire, addresses long-term elderly care issues that can arise unexpectedly. This introductory Medicaid workshop discusses a loved one’s transition from independent to assisted-living arrangements, including how to pay for nursing homes and will they take the home, as well as who is liable for debts. Please join us before the unexpected happens. It meets Tuesday, May 27 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

“Navigating Child Support” — Gloucester County Social Services Child Support Specialist Gina Foster describes the processes to establishing paternity, filing for support services and enforcing existing court orders. A review of the family court, probation and social services are discussed as well as individual rights. It meets Wednesday, May 28 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
