Woodbury City Public School Students to Participate in Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

On Monday, January 20, while most students in the area will be enjoying their day off from school for the federal holiday, approximately 85 students from Woodbury City Public Schools will be participating in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, embracing a “day on, not a day off.”

Denise Dunham, principal of Woodbury Junior-Senior High School, will officially start the Day of Service at 9:00 a.m. with a breakfast and program marking the significance of the occasion and addressing the theme of “What are you doing for others?”. As part of the celebration, students will provide testimonials of what service learning means to them. In addition, two Girl Scout troops from Woodbury have volunteered to participate alongside the high school students, initiating the next generation of Woodbury students into the high school’s mentality of giving back to the community.

At 10:00 a.m., all senior high students will be deployed to “Service Stations” throughout the city of Woodbury.  Some of the local organizations that will be participating include:

Woodbury students have successfully logged over 10,000 service learning hours since the beginning of the 2010-2011 academic year. In support of the District’s Strategic Plan, students are required to complete a total of 72 hours of service learning over the course of their high school career. The purpose of service learning is to acquaint high school students with the need to become participating agents of change by providing volunteering efforts to both their school and community. Students can provide service in and around their community on a voluntary basis to public and nonprofit agencies, civic, charitable and governmental organizations, and opportunities within the school district.
