Civil-Rights Inspired Choral Performance Planned for United Methodist Church

A choral work retelling a seminal event in the battle for civil rights in America will be performed at Haddonfield United Methodist Church on Sunday, Feb. 9. at 3 p.m.

"The Children's March" will be performed by the Singing City choir. The group is made up of 115 adult and children singers based in Philadelphia.

"It is a theatrical concert work for adult and children’s chorus, soloists, and a small ensemble to portray major characters that were part of the movement," organizers said.

The work was commissioned last year to mark the 50th anniversary of a march by children in Birmingham, Alabama that defied a police force nationally known for violence against protesters during the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s.

"With dogs and fire hoses, police tried to stop them," an account by the choir said. "Yet, in ways their parents could not, the children prevailed, defying the police intimidation that long had plagued Birmingham’s black community. Singing was a large part of the protest and resulting arrests of thousands of children."
