She Wants a Hippopotamus for Christmas

A West Deptford woman's 8,000-pound holiday wish is fulfilled early.

Remember that crazy song where Gayla Peevey crones about wanting a hippopotamus for Christmas? According to young Gayla, "Only a hippopotamus will do."

"No crocodiles, no rhinoceroses. I only like hippopotamuses."

West Deptford's Alexandra Holmes can relate.

Holmes recently met her "Christmas gift" at the Philadelphia Zoo when she saw her adopted hippos there, according to the Gloucester County Times. Holmes' boyfriend arranged for the couple to care for the hippos behind the scenes at a special zoo program. The day was an early present for the West Deptford woman.

Holmes' adopted hippos, Unna and Cindy, tip the scales at 4,000 pounds each, the Times said. Holmes pronounced them "so friendly" and "so graceful in the water."
