Get Out: High Art and Roller Derby

Here are five things that you can do with or without a sweetheart this weekend. Who said February couldn't be fun?

Are you sick of cupids and heart shaped boxes already? Well, here are five events you can go to without being taunted by chocolate hearts and teddy bears. Enjoy.

 The Rocky Horror Show

  •  Where/When: The Sketch Club Players of Woodbury, 433 Glover St, Woodbury on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 13 at 2 p.m.
  •  What’s Going On: The local players Stage Left Productions will be putting on a “professional production” of the long running British comedy musical Rocky Horror Show live on stage. Don’t miss any of the music or mayhem from this daring play that was later adapted into the cult classic film Rocky Horror Picture Show.
  •  Pricing: Tickets are $20 for general admission

  • Where/When: The Theater of the Living Arts (TLA)–334 South St., Philadelphia, PA. Shows are at 3:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12
  • What’s Going On: Singer-songwriter and innovative guitarist Keller Williams returns to Philadelphia! Williams combines bluegrass, funk, alternative, folk and jazz to create a fun, original sound. This one man band uses a looping unit to create full, dynamic music that has been compared to legendary musicians Leo Kottke and Michael Hedges. Be prepared for uniquely built rhythms and improvisation as the one-of-a-kind artist takes the stage.
  • Pricing: Tickets for the 3:30 show are $15 in advance or $18 the day of the show. Tickets for the 9 p.m. show are $24.50 in advance or $27 the day of the show.

Mason Porter

  • Where/When: Kennett Flash–102 Sycamore Alley, Kennett Square, PA at 8 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 12
  •  What’s Going On: Get ready to clap your hand and sing with the band! This five-man band from West Chester, PA combines folk, rock, bluegrass and the blues and has been part of the 2010 Philly Folk Festival. Mason Porter has opened for major acts around the country and is bringing their folksy sound to Philly while celebrating their newest album Story of the Rifle. Kennett Flash is an all ages venue that doubles as a BYOB restaurant.
  • Pricing: $15 in advance, $18 the day of the show

  • Where/When: Suzanne Roberts Theatre, S. Broad St., Philadelphia, PA, on Saturday Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 13 at 3 p.m.
  • What’s Going On: The award-winning David Mamet play Race is about three attorneys, two black and one white, who find themselves defending a wealthy white man against the charges of raping a young black woman.
  • Pricing: $46-$59

GCC Art Gallery Celebrates African-American History Month

  • Where/When: The Dr. Ross Beitzel Art Gallery at Gloucester County College–1400 Tanyard Rd., Sewell from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • What’s Going On: Gloucester County College and the South Jersey Chapter of LINKS, Inc. have put together an art exhibit that features nine artists which will include the African masks of Vusumusi Maduna; a tribute to dance choreographer and scholar Katherine Dunham by Luther Alridge, aka Obrafo; the paintings of Joan Wallace Reeves and Walter Cade III; quilts by Kathleen Lindsey; the charcoal and pastel drawings of Michele Lucas; a vintage hats and millinery display by Ruby Peters; jewelry by Sandra Peterson-Giles and cartoons by 12-year-old Vincent Wilson.
  •  Pricing: Free

Love Is a Battlefield: South Jersey Derby Girls Roller Derby

  • When/Where: the Deptford Skating Center, 510 Tacoma Blvd., Westville, at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12
  • What's Going On: South Jersey Derby takes on Man's Ruin Roller Derby in a battle of the B teams. It's roller derby, so you'll get to see crashing, bashing and all kinds of mayhem.
  • Pricing: $8 in advance, $10 at the door
