Grab and Go Family Planner: The Almost Free Weekend

Get the whole family out this weekend to experience a revolution, Aladdin's magic carpet, a civil war battleground, or soaking wet pirates!

It's not every weekend that you can stroll through the French Revolution, hit pirates with a wet sponge or learn how to make your own candles. This is one of those weekends. Better yet, four of the events below are free admission. Enjoy.

Family Fun Show

  • Where/When: Fasola Park–12 Sycamore Lane, Deptford, NJ. 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 15.
  • What’s Going On: Come enjoy family-friendly, fun, sing-a-long songs with The Alphabet Song. Dance to the music at this free event!
  • Pricing: Free

Pirate Splash Day

  • Where/When: Colonial Pennsylvania Plantation–3900
    N Sandy Flash Dr. Newtown Square, PA. Noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 16.
  • What’s Going On: Join in on the water-themed festivities as the local militia repels the unsightly pirates! Wear a bathing suit and some old sneakers as you race rubber duckies in the creek, join the water balloon toss and get soaked by water guns in the
    mighty gauntlet!
  • Pricing: $8, children under 4 are free.


Bastille Day

  • Where/When: The Eastern State Penitentiary–2027 Fairmount Ave., Philadelphia, PA. 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 16.
  • What’s Going On: Come dressed as a peasant or noblemen and witness a slightly comical version of the French Revolution! Tour the Bastille at the Penitentiary, hear live music from Philly
    Musette, storm the walls with a Super Soaker and much more. This is part of a four-day celebration of Bastille Day sponsored by the Penitentiary and other local businesses.
  • Pricing: Reenactment and Street Party: free, tours: $10, students, seniors and kids: $5


Wix & Wax Candlemaking

  • Where/When: Red Bank Battlefield / Whitall Museum–100 Hessian Avenue, National Park, NJ. Noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 17.
  • What’s Going On: Learn how to make your very own candles, and while you are there scout out the remains of the civil war stronghold Fort Mercer, the James and Ann Whitall House, playgrounds and picnic areas. No registration is required.
  • Pricing: free


Disney’s Aladdin at the Collingswood Library

  • Where/When: Collingswood Public Library–771 Haddon Ave., Collingswood, NJ. 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, July 15.
  • What’s Going On: Watch the classic animated Disney movie in the comfort of an air conditioned library. Sing along with Jasmine, Aladdin, Genie and all of their friends and enjoy free popcorn. Other snacks are available for purchase. An adult must accompany their children.
