Thousands Expected for Haddonfield Crafts and Fine Art Show

Vendors from as far as Arizona descend on the town this weekend.

Haddonfield closes its main street and side lanes to traffic this weekend for the 19th annual, two-day Crafts and Fine Arts Festival.

The adjective fine didn’t just slip in there.

More than 250 professional artists and crafters will be unpacking at daybreak. Sales begin at 11 a.m. Many of the vendors are making the local stop as part of a national trunk tour. What they bring with them, from as far away as Arizona, are wood carvings and wall hangings, hand tooled leather goods, and rocking chairs.

You can buy an engagement ring from a street vendor. Or Chinese brush water color to present to a special friend. Or, best of all, a felted wool handbag for that really special person: yourself.

The list of vendors includes 63 jewelry designers and 14 sellers of art glass. Following a national trend in personal and home fashion, 49 crafters who work with fiber are expected.

Art and photography has always had a strong showing and five sculptors will have displays.

Organization of the show historically has been faultless.  The weather, not quite so. The show has been plagued by excessive heat and sudden downpours. Yet the vendors return, year after year, often connecting in advance with former customers by email.

The weather this weekended is expected to be sunny with highs around 90 degrees.

This year, many are on Facebook. Just check out Haddonfield Crafts and Fine Arts Festival. The posts don't mention prices. Advice from past consumers: Bring money. Or at least a Visa card or a checkbook.

The lineup features two new selling areas, which now extends from borough hall to Washington Avenue.

Shops in town remain open. Musicians and face-painters will entertain and many restaurants will set up outdoor cafes.
