Eagles Teams Continue Champion Title Chase

With only a few more games left to determine NJSIAA Group 2 championships, West Deptford still has a couple of teams left in the hunt.

Girls Lacrosse

West Deptford pushed back hard against a top-ranked Allentown team that had only been beaten once all year, but wasn't able to overcome a 10-goal first half from the top-ranked Redbirds.

Paige Paratore led the Eagles with 4 goals, and Rachel Krott fired in two more, but three Allentown scorers each had hat tricks, and another potted four goals in the 15-8 semifinal loss.

Congratulations to coach Julie Catrambone and the Eagles girls on a strong playoff run.

Boys Lacrosse

The boys lacrosse team gave a strong effort in its bid for a Group I title shot, but fell to the eventual group champs, top-ranked Rumson, in a 9-4 loss May 23.

Connor Smith had a hat trick and added an assist, and Zack Kaestner and Joe Diaco each found the score sheet in the effort. Rumson's balanced attack featured goals from six different players.

Congratulations to coach Mike Yarusso and the boys for a great season that featured many highlights.

Baseball

Ty Castellano was the one-man show who shut down the Woodstown Wolverines in a 1-0 shutout victory. Castellano fanned 10 and drove in the game's only run with a deep infield single in the bottom of the fourth, according to NJ.com.

The win puts West Deptford into a semifinal matchup against No. 2-ranked Sterling. It also kept 40-year Woodstown coach Lee Ware from tying the South Jersey career wins mark held by Russ Spicer, who compiled 603 victories in his coaching tenures at Haddonfield, Moorestown and Paulsboro.

Softball

Deptford had a three-run outburst in the top of the third inning, but that was the last time the Spartans would hold the lead, as the Eagles piled on 7 more runs en route to a 9-3 quarterfinal win.

Sydney Ponto went the distance for the win, and Kat Ziegler, Alex Anderson and Ciarra Girouard all doubled in the effort. Next up for the Eagles is a semifinal matchup against Middle Township.
