Hurricane Irene Slams South Jersey

Residents are already feeling the effects of the storm.

Notable developments from Hurricane Irene's damaging winds and rain so far:

  • At least 2,000 PSE&G customers in West Deptford are without power as of 11 p.m., with similar numbers in Deptford. PSE&G is reporting Woodbury, Westville and National Park all have up to 500 outages each.
  • The Delaware River was at 7.24 feet at 11 p.m., and is running about a foot and a half above normal. Flood stage is at 8.2 feet.
  • Philadelphia International Airport reported wind gusts up to 52 m.p.h. just before 10 p.m.
  • The airport shut down at 10:30 p.m. Saturday, and could be closed through 4 p.m. Sunday. Check with your airline if you have a flight scheduled.
  • Tractor trailers are banned from the Betsy Ross, Commodore Barry, Walt Whitman and Benjamin Franklin bridges, and there's a 25 m.p.h. speed limit in effect on all four bridges.
  • There's flooding on Route 295 as of 10:35 p.m., with police and firefighters working to rescue stranded drivers.
  • The ramp to Route 130 from the Commodore Barry Bridge is closed because of flooding.
  • A tornado watch is in effect in Gloucester County until 5 a.m.
  • SEPTA has completely shut down in Philadelphia.
  • PATCO ceased running trains at 10:50 p.m., and will be out of service until after the storm.
  • A falling tree took down wires on Andaloro Way in Deptford around 9:40 p.m.
  • Photos posted on Twitter showed beaches at Margate, Ocean City and Wildwood largely under water during the late afternoon.
