Hurricane Irene's Aftereffects Linger

Flooding remains a concern throughout Gloucester County.

Days after Hurricane Irene dumped more than six inches of rain on parts of Gloucester County, cleanup continued Monday as local, county and state workers began the long task ahead of them.

Some of the updates through Tuesday night:

  • PSE&G’s reported power outages dropped from more than 11,000 countywide to less than 500 by the end of Tuesday night.
  • The state Department of Environmental Protection inspected a pair of dams–the Mill Pond Dam in Mullica Hill, which was repaired with loads of stone, and Iona Lake in Franklin–Tuesday. County workers were pouring material to strengthen the Iona Lake dam into the afternoon.

  • Crown Point Road between Paradise Road and Mid-Atlantic Parkway, which remained flooded at the creek.

Flooding remained a concern, as the National Weather Service issued a flood warning for streams in the southeastern portion of Gloucester County through 11 p.m. Tuesday, and a coastal flood advisory for the Delaware River and its associated creeks until 5 a.m. Tuesday.

Pitman Golf Course was closed Monday, thanks in part to downed trees, and may open Tuesday; before heading over, call the pro shop at 589-6688.
