West Deptford Key Club: 2013 in Review

A snapshot of the many achievements of the West Deptford High School Key Club for 2013.

The following was submitted by West Deptford High School Key Club advisor Kathleen Yeager.

It has been a busy end of the year for the WDHS Key Club.  I want to share with you some of the things we have been up to.

At our 7th annual Volleyball Marathon in April we raised $3,300.00 for The Eliminate Project, which helps to eliminate the global issue of maternal neonatal tetanus. 30 student and staff teams competed and raise funds for this worthy cause. Thanks to RiverWinds for hosting this fantastic event.

The week of May 20, we held a week-long Alex's Lemonade Stand event. We sold lemonade after school Monday-Thursday and during lunch periods in the cafeteria on Friday. Mrs. Herbst's FCCLA baked us brownies to sell along with the lemonade.  We raised $150 for Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.

On Thursday, May 30, Dale Johnson, Max Bailey, Melissa McCole, Katie Guest, Mia Forbes and I participated in Volunteers of America Delaware Valley's Build Day.  We helped landscape, plant trees, construct a gazebo, and paint picnic tables for the clients who reside at Aletha Wright shelter for men and Home for the Brave shelter for homeless veterans. We also delivered toiletries and food that we had collected.

On Saturday, June 8, 2013, eight WDHS Key Club members and I traveled to The College of New Jersey to volunteer at the New Jersey Special Olympics Summer Games. Adult, teen, and child athletes participate in this inspiring event.

Dale Johnson, Max Bailey, and Walter Reeve spent the day as escorts for athletes.  Each escort is responsible for making sure their athlete gets to their event on time, cheer them on when they are competing, have lunch with them, and spend the day with them when they are not competing.

Melissa McCole, Katie Guest,  Stephanie Groves, Erika Sprague, Micaela Wilner, and I volunteered in the Olympic Village. We supervised various "moon bounce" type activities that the athletes and their families enjoyed when they were not competing.

I would like to recognize my amazing officers: Colin Quinn, Alex Daley-Montgomery, Dale Johnson, Max Bailey, and Allex Bethke for their hard work and dedication to Key Club and their community. It has been an honor and privilege to work with such kind and caring young people.
