Letter: Another Sheep in the Herd This Election Season

The letter writer's friend has a civic attitude that gets under his skin.

To the Editor:

My wife and I moved to West Deptford seven years ago. Having lived in Camden County for 34 years, we saw firsthand how corruption in government can take hold when one party rule has been in power for too long.

When recently talking to a retired friend, I mentioned that I’ve become interested in township government. I attend the monthly township meetings to see how my tax money is being spent. Since the new administration took over in 2012, more residents have been attending as the auditorium is always full. I have learned at these meetings the township was operating with no general ledger, bogus water bills, millions of dollars missing from the RiverWinds golf course construction, millions wasted fighting the Sunoco refinery, etc., etc.

I encouraged her to attend the meetings and become a more informed resident and voter. Each meeting something new is presented—it’s truly unbelievable. When I asked her if she cared how her tax money was being spent, she answered that she has never attended a township meeting and doesn’t get involved in politics. I mentioned the presidential election coming up in November, but also important the election for township committee and she should familiarize herself with the candidates.

Her response to me was complacent and apathetic. She said to me quote: “Oh, I used to be in a union, so I always vote Democrat.” So there you have it. My friend, who unfortunately can’t be bothered to think for herself, is just another sheep in the herd.
