2-Year-Old in Cooper After Weekend Accident on Hessian Avenue

The boy was hit after running into the road, West Deptford police Chief Craig Mangano said.

A 2-year-old boy was seriously injured and remains in the hospital after getting hit by a car in the Verga section of the township Saturday, Chief Craig Mangano said.

The boy, whose identity has not yet been released, was hit after running out on to Hessian Avenue from a driveway about 100 feet from the intersection with Storrie Avenue, Mangano said.

The driver of the Nissan pickup who hit him, Matthew J. Murphy, 23, of Westville, has not been charged in the incident, which is still under investigation, Mangano said.

Murphy, who was towing a 24-boat, kept on going after the collision, Mangano said, but added the preliminary investigation indicates Murphy wasn’t even aware he’d struck the boy.

West Deptford police went to Murphy’s home in Westville following the crash and brought him back to the police station for questioning.
