Deptford Veteran Indicted for Fatal Crash

Rene Berben is accused of killing Runnemede resident Steven Kennedy in a crash in March.

A Deptford military veteran accused of killing a Runnemede resident in an was indicted this week on charges related to the accident.

Army Sgt. Rene Berben, 26, faces charges of second-degree vehicular homicide and third-degree assault by automobile in the March 19 crash.

Police said Berben had an open container of beer in his Ford pickup when he smashed into a Nissan sedan driven by Steven Kennedy, 29, of Runnemede, on Route 41 near the Kmart in Deptford.

Kennedy was killed, and his passengers, Elisha Bailey, 52, and Dwayne Pettit, 28, both of Glassboro, were injured.

Berben was also injured in the crash.

Berben was serving in the Army at the time of the crash, and had previously been deployed to Afghanistan.
