Driver Strikes Train in Rush Hour Accident in West Deptford

A 51-year-old Mullica Hill man whose car struck the front of a train engine was sent to the hospital with complaints of chest pains, police say.

A driver whose vehicle was struck by a train in West Deptford on Friday morning was transported to a nearby hospital with complaints of chest pains after the accident, according to West Deptford Police.

A 51-year-old Mullica Hill man had been driving on Grove Rd. when his Nissan struck the engine of the train as it was passing by, according to Deputy Chief Sean McKenna.

The impact ripped off the front bumper of the vehicle and spun it, McKenna said, but the car stayed off the tracks.

Investigators from Conrail and CSX were on the scene before 9 a.m., McKenna said, and their preliminary findings seemed to indicate that the signals at the intersection appeared to be working and the structure is intact.

Early reports are that the accident may have been caused by driver inattention, McKenna said. The driver's complaints of chest pain reportedly were due to his impact with the steering column.

As of 9 a.m., the roadways had been cleared and the flow of traffic had resumed.
