Flood Waters Trap Man on Crown Point Road

Police chief: Driving through flood waters puts you and responders at risk. Crown Point Road closed Thursday because of flooding.

Early morning floodwaters trapped a man in his car on Crown Point Road, necessitating an emergency rescue.

A driver was leaving the Willow Woods Mobile Park Home Thursday morning and driving north on Crown Point Road when his car, a white Oldsmobile, became stuck in floodwaters.

West Deptford Police got the call for help around 5:30 a.m. when the driver couldn’t safely exit his vehicle. Thorofare Volunteer Fire Company responded, driving a truck through the waters to the man, who was able to climb from his car into the fire truck.

Driving through flood waters is always a bad idea, West Deptford Police Chief Craig Mangano said Thursday.

“If anyone experiences any kind of water on a road, you should never proceed forward,” the chief said. “You never know if the road is washed out underneath, and you can easily become stuck.

“You’re only putting yourself and emergency responders in harm’s way.”

The heavy rainstorms overnight caused more flooding in West Deptford, including on Crown Point Road, which remained closed as of 1 p.m. Thursday. Officials also were keeping an eye on West First Avenue for signs of rising waters, Mangano said.
