PA Fugitive, Wanted for Attempted Murder, Surrenders in West Deptford

The Lincoln University, PA, man was wanted for two counts of attempted homicide, and surrendered to police without incident at the Kingswick apartment complex on Wednesday.

A Pennsylvania man wanted for a pair of attempted homicides surrendered to SWAT units in West Deptford without incident Wednesday night.

Charles F. Haux, 51, of Lincoln University, PA, was charged with being a fugitive from justice. Haux was lodged in the Gloucester County correctional facility in default of $100,000, full-cash bail. He is awaiting extradition to Pennsylvania.

According to West Deptford Police Chief Craig Mangano, township officers were contacted by Pennsylvania State Police at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday with a tip that Haux might be at the Kingswick Apartment Complex.

West Deptford police saw Haux's vehicle in the parking lot, and then identified him in an apartment in the "O" Building through a sliding glass door. The SWAT team was called out, and after a brief negotiation, Haux surrendered without incident.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, Haux was wanted in two shootings "in an argument over money" that occurred in New London Township, PA, on June 11.

According to a police report, Haux placed a small-caliber handgun to the first victim's head and attempted to pull the trigger, but the weapon misfired. Haux still shot both victims—one in the chest, the other twice in the abdomen—as they struggled with the gun, and then fled the scene, police say.

The first victim was treated at the Jeffersonville, PA, hospital for tissue and muscle damage; the second was transported to Christiana Hospital in Delaware with critical but non-life-threatening injuries.

Haux was previously indicted on 12 counts of oxycodone distribution in a 2011 drug sting at a Boing Plant in Ridley Park, the Delco Times reported.

"On behalf of the West Deptford Police Department, I'd like to thank the SWAT team for their swift response and for their diligent work in closing this incident without any injury to bystander, suspect or police," said Chief Craig Mangano.

Mangano also thanked West Deptford police for their "fine work" in coordinating the investigation with police from Pennsylvania.
