Motives Unclear in Theft at West Deptford ShopRite, Police Say

What's the strangest thing you can think someone would steal from a supermarket?

West Deptford police are investigating the theft of a Symbol Technologies barcode scanner gun from the ShopRite supermarket on Route 45.

At 8:30 p.m. on August 19, police report that a tall, thin male with black hair entered the store and proceeded to the frozen food section.

The man allegedly grabbed a scanner, which is used by employees to take inventory, and left. The device is reportedly valued at $1,132.

Township police were also advised that the ShopRite in Gibbstown also reported that a barcode scanner gun was stolen on the same date by a man matching the description of the person wanted in connection with the West Deptford ShopRite theft.

"They felt—they’re not sure—that it possibly could have been a disgruntled ex-employee," said West Deptford Acting Police Chief Samuel DiSimone.
