Mullica Hill Teen Arrested in West Deptford Jewelry Theft

Police say that Kevin P. Smiley took more than $5,000 of jewelry from the home of a woman for whom his parent was providing care after an accident.

A Mullica Hill man who police say stole $5,835 worth of jewelry from the West Deptford home of an accident victim has been arrested.

West Deptford Police reported that 19-year-old Kevin P. Smiley was charged with theft of movable property after detectives traced him back to receipts for the sale of jewelry stolen from a home on Budd Blvd.

Lt. Sean McKenna credited Det. Cpl. Rich Henry with developing Smiley as a suspect by following the paper trail for the stolen goods to a second-hand jewelry dealer in Woodbury.

Unfortunately, he said, the jewelry had been melted down and could not be recovered.

McKenna said that Smiley had had access to the home as the son of a caregiver assisting the homeowner.
