No Charges Against Driver in Hessian Avenue Crash That Injured Boy

Police said it appeared the 2-year-old ran into the side of the truck as it went down Hessian Avenue on July 21.

After more than a week’s worth of investigation, will not file any charges against the driver of a Nissan pickup involved in a , police Chief Craig Mangano said Tuesday.

Eyewitness accounts indicated the driver, Matthew J. Murphy, 23, of Westville, was obeying all motor vehicle laws at the time of the accident, Mangano said.

Detectives believe the boy ran into the front passenger’s side of the pickup, which was towing a 24-foot boat down Hessian Avenue near Storrie Avenue, though Mangano said it was difficult to pinpoint exactly where the collision occurred due to a lack of evidence of the impact.

“There’s no evidence at all of him hitting the front of the truck,” Mangano said.

The preliminary report indicated the boy was at home with a babysitter when he ran out into the road, Mangano said, and there’s no possibility of charges against that individual.

The injured toddler remains in Cooper University Hospital in Camden, Mangano said, and is still in critical but stable condition. Hospital officials have not released any other details beyond that, citing patient privacy laws.

The investigation into the accident, which involved the officers who initially responded, the detective division and the traffic safety unit, wrapped up Monday night after numerous interviews and an inspection of the pickup truck, Mangano said.
