Patch Writer's Mother-In-Law Killed in CT School Shootings

Mary Sherlach, the mother-in-law of Patch writer Eric Schwartz, was among 27 people killed in the second-deadliest school shooting in American history.

The deadly shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, claimed the life of a Patch writer's family member.

Mary Sherlach, the school's psychologist, was among 26 people, including 20 children, who died when a gunman opened fire at the school Friday morning. The gunman, identified as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, also died in the rampage.

Sherlach was the mother-in-law of Deptford resident Eric Schwartz, a longtime Patch freelancer who covers high school sports in South Jersey.

Sherlach, 56, lived in Trumbull, CT.

Schwartz and his wife, Maura, arrived in Connecticut on Friday evening to be with their family. They could not be reached for comment.

In the shooting spree, Lanza also reportedly killed his mother, who was a teacher at the school, and Sandy Hook's principal, Dawn Hochsprung.

Update, 2:35 a.m. Dec. 15: Schwartz spoke to Patch about his mother-in-law, Mary Sherlach. Read his thoughts at .

Pundit needs to learn that the liberals can't control drugs, let alone guns. They are here to stay. Now I suggest you to go get one and exercise your 2nd amendment.

We only need to ask one simple question : What psychiatric drug was he taking or withdrawing from? Sometimes simple questions are the hardest to ask. Those questions would be real real hard for the media to ask, because after reporting the event, taking station breaks for advertisements for antidepressants and other psychiatric drugs might give big media editors and producers indigestion , since they depend on Big Pharma sponsorship. http://ssristories.com/ This website is a collection of 4,800+ news stories with the full media article available, mainly criminal in nature, that have appeared in the media (newspapers, TV, scientific journals) or that were part of FDA testimony in either 1991, 2004 or 2006, in which psych drugs are mentioned.

Day 3 no mention of the psych drugs Lanza was taking or withdrawing from. SSRI's are deadly, read the inserts. http://ssristories.com/ This website is a collection of 4,800+ news stories with the full media article available, mainly criminal in nature, that have appeared in the media (newspapers, TV, scientific journals) or that were part of FDA testimony in either 1991, 2004 or 2006, in which psych drugs are mentioned. Steve............After reading most of the post on the subject of weapon/gun owning... I've come to the conclusion that those who support the owning of guns by 'anybody' seem to need to have something to prove about themselves. I can see owning guns for 'hunting' as my uncles did each year, legally. Bringing home deer meat mostly and sometimes rabbit, which by the way, tastes like chicken to me. ANYWAY, I've read some of the posters on in my 'mail' and haven't yet found them in this link as wanted to respond to you. Your post is very reasonable compared to those who 'shoot off their mouths' w/o even considering the other persons statements. You are right.......too many people owning guns don't use their God given brains to consider what harm guns left unsecured can kill innocent men, women and children.......as happened ...........it's a terrible tragedy and those that bitch and moan about those of us criticizing the owning of guns, have their heads up where the sun don't shine...AND...I bet this post will be deleted because of my last statement....but it 'ain't' vulgar ......
Nancy VanTwistern December 16, 2012 at 06:44 PM
Yes, Steve, the founding fathers WOULD be shocked at how that has been twisted. So many forget that when the 2nd. amendment was instituted we were not a country as large as we are now AND we did not have a 'standing army'. Men were called up as needed and they either showed up or not with their weapons.
Nancy VanTwistern December 16, 2012 at 06:47 PM
Right on........Beach person..........to my way of thinking...some just want bigger and better guns or ANYTHING to prove something about themselves...which they KNOW is lacking.........don't work!! Anyone with brains can see through this type.....
Nancy VanTwistern December 16, 2012 at 06:52 PM
AAAhhhh, seems to me 'Paul' needs to stop criticizing those who disagree with him or criticizes his opines..........it's a free country Paul..........and smart & intelligence people should not have to demean those who disagree with them...we should all have 'open minds' not influenced by any organization or whatever like the NRA...by the way....in reading much via the computer, it seems as if the NRA gave more money to the Republican candidates this last election than ever before...it's in the New York times and other good sources.
BobDee December 16, 2012 at 07:28 PM
...And big pharma gave more to the (D)'s then ever before? So. http://ssristories.com/ click, if you care.
Barney December 16, 2012 at 08:03 PM
Join the NRA today. Protect yourselves from the next tragedy folks. This ould have been stopped if we were able to sell AK 47s at 7-11s.
John Q. Public December 16, 2012 at 08:27 PM
Years ago, mentally-ill were committed to institutions, kept out of sight and harm's way. Here, a mentally-ill person stole firearms, killed the owner, and then took the owner's car to a school, where he killed children with the stolen guns. The NRA is opposes all those actions, and does not support selling firearms in 7-11's. You are making light of a terrible tragedy, and it's not funny.

How senseless, my thoughts and prayers are with you and the others. We will see them on the other side. Bless Mary's soul.

Shame on you, Peter~~showing respect and sympathy is not 'exploitive'....
Barney December 17, 2012 at 12:53 AM
Gun sales aren't going anywhere except up Pundit. If LIBS were for guns you would be whining like a young girl today.. 99.999% of the blame should be directed towrds the greedy LIBERAL HOLLYWOOD MOVIE MAKERS who make millions meanwhile corrupt the minds of our youth. America now tastes the blood thanks to the sick Hollywood machine. Would Obama or Feinstein dare go after them? This kid played violent video games since he could walk. The kid and mother were wacked, but HOLLYWOOD gets most of the blame for the way young society has evolved into bloodthirsty beasts.

The problem with stricter gun control is you live in America, not Russia. If you can't beat 'em you might as well join them, Protect your family at night Pundit. You can't be running arounf your house with a pair of flowered underwear on and your kids baseball bat. There are crackheads out there looking for a fix. Go get yourself a nice Colt.
Mark December 17, 2012 at 02:56 AM
They aren't safe at all.
Mark December 17, 2012 at 02:59 AM
You can easily get into any school. Just show up with dozen cupcakes and you will be let in!

My heart goes out to the families of the victims of this needless tragedy. Credit, of course, to the brave teachers who died trying to defend their charges. It's a crime that the teachers and administrators, like all others nation-wide, were, and are, prohibited from being able to actually defend themselves and our children. Just as TSA is feel-good security theater and the Israelis actually know how to screen threats, in Israel teachers and parent volunteers are trained and armed so that they can actually prevent/stop such acts of mass murder. Here we have large, well advertised zones rich in easy targets that are prohibited by law from being defended in a timely and effective manner. Teachers already must pass stringent background checks before they are given access to our children. We should make training and ready access to defensive weapons in the school a job requirement and part of their certification. Every moment of delay in neutralizing the threat equals more dead innocents. Stop the insanity. Allow teachers to defend themselves and their charges and require that they be trained and equipped to do so.

No politics here. Just a sincere expression of sympathy to you on the death of your mother-in-law.
Kim December 19, 2012 at 01:06 PM
No politics here either. Not on this post. My sincerest sympathies to Eric and his family on their loss. My son is around the same age as the children that were killed and this tragedy has affected me greatly. I hae amazing respect for the teachers and staff who put themselves in harms way for their students. Heroes. All of them.
Ruth December 26, 2012 at 03:59 PM
I also give my sincerest love and hugs to the family.
