Police Release More Details on Fatal Fourth of July Crash

NJ State Police confirm the deceased was Mary Campbell, 32, of Pennsville. Other passengers were also injured in the accident.

New Jersey State Police have confirmed the identities of several passengers injured last Wednesday in a fatal highway accident on I-295 in West Deptford.

Mary Campbell, 32, was one of four people traveling southbound in a Hyundai Accent that was struck from behind by a Toyota Camry just a few minutes before midnight on July 3, according to NJSP.

Campbell was airlifted from the scene to Cooper University Medical Center in Camden, but died there from injuries sustained in the accident.

She had been sitting in the back seat of the Hyundai with fellow Pennsville resident David Jones, who was trapped in the car after the impact, said NJSP Sgt. Brian Polite.

Jones, 28, also sustained multiple injuries in the crash, Polite said, and was transported to Cooper with Campbell and front-seat passenger Dawn Modell, 27, of Deepwater, NJ.

Cooper spokesperson Lori Shaffer confirmed Monday that Jones remains at the hospital in stable condition. Modell sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the accident, and has since been discharged from the facility.

The Hyundai was being driven by 41-year-old David Hewitt of Carneys Point, NJ, who was uninjured in the crash.

Initial reports from state police indicated that 21-year-old Mohammad Khan of Cherry Hill, who was driving the Camry that struck the Accent, was charged with DWI at the scene.

Polite said the case remains under investigation, Polite said, but that "other charges may be pending."
