Possible Red-Light Camera Settlement Won't Bring in Big Bucks

All told, the settlement would amount to $4.2 million, but drivers can expect a check for far less.

What's your red-light camera ticket worth? Probably a lot of headaches, a fair bit of hassle—and $8.50.

Residents in 18 towns across New Jersey, including Deptford, could receive checks for at least that much in a red-light camera settlement.

The $4.2 million settlement is proposed to address accusations that the 18 towns and the red-light camera company failed to follow state rules laid out in the Pilot Red Light Camera Program, the South Jersey Times reports.

About 500,000 drivers received notice of the settlement, and a judge will hold a hearing Sept. 12 in Trenton to decide if the settlement should be accepted, according to the South Jersey Times.

According to the settlement, posted on njviolationsettlement.com, individual drivers who received tickets as a result of this system on or before Aug. 1, 2012, are entitled to receive at least $8.50.

No traffic study was conducted in areas that would include cameras prior to their implementation, and there were no six-month maintenance inspections, according to the report. Despite denying the allegations, the towns and American Traffic Solutions agreed to pay the settlement.

The 18 towns listed in the settlement are: Brick, Deptford, East Brunswick, East Windsor, Glassboro, Jersey City, Lawrence, Linden, Gloucester Township, Monroe, Palisades Park, Piscataway, Pohatcong, Rahway, Roselle Park, Union, Wayne and Woodbridge.
