Helene Reed, Philip Dieser III Win Contested County Primaries
The Democratic race for surrogate and Republican race for sheriff were the only contested races at the county level.
Current Gloucester County Surrogate Helene Reed easily handled a primary challenger, and Republican sheriff challenger Philip Dieser III knocked off his opponent by a three-to-one margin in Tuesday’s primary, according to unofficial results released Tuesday night.
Dieser, who had the backing of the county party, won with 76.8 percent of the vote, beating Chris Marrero.
Meanwhile, Reed trumped former Assemblyman Anthony Marsella by an almost seven-to-one margin, winning 83.52 percent of the vote.

The other county races were uncontested. Democratic freeholder incumbents Robert Damminger and Joe Chila will face off against Republicans Margie Love and Tom Thistle, while Democratic incumbent James Hogan will face Republican Jeffrey Morris in the clerk’s race.
Incumbent Democratic Sheriff Carmel Morina and Republican surrogate candidate Carolyn Chapman will also move on to November after being unopposed.

Turnout was low across the board—just over 9 percent countywide—despite the presidential race, which had been decided before New Jersey’s primary, after all the candidates besides Mitt Romney dropped out of the race.
