NJ Politicians React to Ryan Being Named Romney's VP Candidate

Elected officials and party leaders were quick to weigh in on the selection Saturday.

Politicians from the county level on up to the federal government reacted soon after . Here's what they had to say:

From Gloucester County's Republicans:

The Gloucester County Republican Executive committee would like to congratulate our next president, Mitt Romney on his choice for our next Vice President. Paul Ryan is an intellectual prodigy and budget guru that will ensure this election cycle is focused on the issues that matter most to the American people. The economy and jobs!

Democrats in New Jersey and around the country will do everything in their power to divert voters’ attention away from the failed policies of the Obama administration: High unemployment, a poor economy and his push for an ever expanding, overreaching and incompetent federal government.

A perfect example was uttered right here in Gloucester County by Senate President Steve Sweeney who talked about shopping carts and trying to wage class warfare regarding entitlements instead of recognizing that Social Security and Medicare are barreling towards bankruptcy unless serious reforms are made.

Every business owner in America, both small and large are outraged over Obama’s utter lack of respect and cluelessness in what it takes to start up and maintain a business especially during bad economic times.

The blood, sweat and treasure that must be invested to build a business is always a risky and storied part of the American Dream. Democrats don’t seem to comprehend that the roads, bridges and schools built by government was paid for by American taxpayers and businesses that provide those jobs.

Just as Governor Chris Christie boldly brought straight talk and exposed the truth about the myriad of problems of New Jersey’s fiscal woes from years of Democrat control in Trenton, the Romney/Ryan team will audaciously speak the truth about America’s economic ills and provide the solutions we need to finally turn our economy around.

We agree with Mr. Ryan: “America is an idea.” Our rights come from nature and God, not from government. It’s time to put American ideas and ideals back to work!

From Congressman Rob Andrews:

"By choosing Paul Ryan as his running mate, Governor Romney has restated the basic choice we face in the election over how to bring prosperity to our country. Governor Romney and Congressman Ryan are running a campaign based on the most conservative thinking in American politics.

They believe that if we choose massive tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans, fewer limits on banks and corporations, and cuts to Medicare, schools, and police and fire, our country will enjoy more jobs and more wealth.

We believe otherwise. We believe that when our children learn at great schools, our families live in safe and strong neighborhoods, and our parents and grandparents can retire trusting the guarantees of Medicare and Social Security, small businesses will grow, the middle class will flourish and America will be stronger.

Governor Romney and Congressman Ryan believe growth occurs from the top down. We believe that growth occurs from the middle class out.

We look forward to a vigorous campaign and we are confident the American people will choose President Obama, Vice President Biden and our path to a more prosperous future."

From U.S. Senate candidate Joe Kyrillos:

"We need thoughtful leaders who want to solve our problems and strengthen our economy like Congressman Ryan, not politicians like Bob Menendez who make our problems worse.

With 42 months of over 8% unemployment, rising poverty levels, and declining household incomes it is clear Bob Menendez has failed New Jersey. That’s why New Jersey will vote this November for change."

From U.S. Senator Robert Menendez:

“Mitt Romney has shown that he means business in his war against America's middle class by choosing as his running mate the architect of the budget plan that favors the nation's wealthiest people and corporations.

Four years of a Romney-Ryan administration would be disastrous for New Jersey’s middle class, who have shouldered too much of the tax burden.

As a result of Rep. Ryan’s proposed budget, seniors on fixed incomes would face greater hardship, as there would be an end to Medicare as we know it, and the Social Security system they spent most of their lives paying into would be privatized and subjected to the whims of the stock market.

Proposed budget cuts would kill job growth and set back the fragile economic recovery. All of these would take a significant step forward to becoming reality with the election of Romney and Ryan.

The addition of Paul Ryan to the Romney ticket only strengthens my resolve to fight for the middle class families of New Jersey and the United States, who were subjected too long to the failed economic policies of the Bush Administration.

The vast majority of Americans understand that we cannot revert to the days of an unbridled Wall Street and a health care system that allows insurance companies to deny a person coverage due to a pre-existing condition or the size of one's wallet.”

From New Jersey Republican Party Chair Samuel Raia:

"The selection of Congressman Paul Ryan to serve as Mitt Romney's vice presidential running mate is tremendous news for the Republican Party and I send him my sincerest congratulations.

For years, Congressman Ryan has fearlessly and thoughtfully led the national debate about how to forge a better and more prosperous path for our country with real conservative solutions.

President Obama has not only failed to lead, but recklessly driven our country into untold mountains of debt, and Congressman Ryan is the strong leader who will help Mitt Romney get America back on track."

From State Senate President Stephen Sweeney:

"Whether it's making $10,000 bets or looking awkward pushing a shopping cart, just when you thought Mitt Romney couldn't be more out of touch with the American people, he selects Congressman Ryan as his running mate.

Mr. Ryan not only proposed to partially privatize Social Security, not only proposed cuts to programs that help the middle class and working poor, but he also proposed to end Medicare as we know it.

That kind of cold, methodical calculating might have been great if Ryan was looking for a spot at Bain Capital. But it is not what the American people need in a vice president.

With his selection today, Mitt Romney continues to show that he has the wrong vision for America."
