Senate President and West Deptford Resident Steve Sweeney Expects Governor's Approval Ratings to Drop

State Sen. President Stephen Sweeney believes Gov. Chris Christie’s poll numbers will take a fall despite recent poll numbers that show the governor is still viewed as a leader rather than a bully.

Sweeney (D-Gloucester), a West Deptford resident, said he believes Christie’s numbers will fall as people begin to pay more attention to “what’s going on” relating to the George Washington Bridge lane closure scandal, according to nj.com.

He also left open the possibility of Christie being impeached over the scandal, according to the report. He told WNYC that if investigations to be conducted by the Senate and the Assembly show a direct connection between the governor and the scandal, that would be grounds for impeachment. He also reiterated events have not yet reached that level, according to the report.

A Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday morning shows 54 percent of potential voters still view Christie as a leader, as opposed to 40 who view him as a bully. His overall approval is at 55 percent, down from his all-time high of 73 percent. Wednesday’s poll results are similar to those taken just after Hurricane Sandy, according to the report.

A Monmouth University poll released on Monday also showed Christie’s approval ratings remain high, but that potential voters don’t believe he’s being completely honest about the scandal.
