Sweeney Disgusted with Ann Coulter Tweet

The state Senate president lashes out at a tweet by political commentator Ann Coulter that described President Obama as a "retard."

Update, 10:20 p.m., Oct. 26: State Senate President Stephen Sweeney released a video statement on Ann Coulter's use of "retard" in a tweet. Click on the video to view.

New Jersey Senate President Steve Sweeney voiced his outrage Tuesday about a tweet by conservative political commentator Ann Coulter during the Oct. 22 presidential debate.

At one point during the debate, Coulter tweeted, "I highly approve of Romney's decision to be kind and gentle to the retard."

Her words drew the ire of many, including Sweeney, a Democratic state senator who sponsored legislation to remove the word "retard" from New Jersey laws and regulations in 2010. Sweeney, a West Deptford resident, also has a daughter who attends school in the Gloucester County Special Services School District.

In his statement, Sweeney said:

It really does not get any more despicable than this. I honestly don’t know if there is another person on this planet as shameless as Ann Coulter. She has no morals, no boundaries and no sense of common decency.

Her thoughtless remarks are meant to provoke and draw attention to whatever latest nonsensical ultra conservative rant she is peddling. I really have no words to describe her other than just a horrible person. I guess going after 9-11 widows was not enough for her. She now has to attack people with disabilities too.

This is not only insulting to millions of people across the country, but to me, it is personal. I have worked hard to scrub that word from our vocabulary forever, and with good reason: words matter. If Ann Coulter wants to get out from behind Twitter and have a face to face discussion with me on why she wishes to insult my daughter and the millions of people with developmental disabilities in this country, I will have it anytime, anywhere, any place.

Adding to the insult, Coulter detractors say, is that this isn't the first time the instigative commentator has used "retard" publicly. She did so in August and September, The Hollywood Reporter says

As in times past, advocacy groups denounced Coulter's use of the word. "Sad to see @AnnCoulter continue her use of hateful language by using the #Rword in her discourse," tweeted the R-word Campaign, a movement to strike "retard" from speech.

sweeney ever looked yourself in the mirror and try to figure out why your so immoral the way you bilk the residents of gloucester county out of millions of dollars. the way you lie and are full of corruption.you sure aren't a prize when it comes to handling people on a political basis

Now its the "R" word?. Lets see, we have the "N" word, the "C" word, the "S" word, the "P" word and the "B" word. Soon we will run out of letters in the alphabet and we wont be able to speak to anyone anymore. People get on with your lives. If someone gets in your face and uses one of these words against you personally, you use the "P" word," Punish". The senator is quite aware of that word. That's the word he uses when people don't do things his way. Meanwhile, the last I heard in this country is that there was freedom of speech. A sitting Senator of the United States should know this. Opps, I used the "S" word, my bad.

Oh, and where was Steves outrage when Ed Schultz of MSNBC called Ann (a private citizen) a "SL*T" (the star is the letter "U") What Steve, no concern for that? Seems your outrage is only for you precious base of followers and not for everyone. You are the worst possible politician out there, one who caters to your own and screws everyone else. I cannot wait till the people of NJ send you packing.

it wasn't a personal attack on your daughter.when sweeney used the word punish he's attacking my family.so Stevie boy before you go accusing others speak for yourself.there's enough verbal attacks on here from both parties the list is endless.so go back to trenton and get this state back to where it should be instead of worrying about who said what.TYPICAL

Let me get this right "She has no morals, no boundaries and no sense of common decency". This is coming from the guy who wants to punch the Governor (who was voted into office by the citizens). I beleave Sweeny meant to say "he has no morals, no boundaries and no sense of common decency".

I applaud your valiant efforts to forge ahead in the arena of political awareness. Here are some devastating words that must also be eradicated from the english language. Leotard..mustard...custard...tardy...retardant...tardis...tardigrade and many more. When you have removed these dasTARDly words from our language and forced us to bow to your desires, please let us know so we'll know our right to use this word has been removed.

Wayne Klotz October 24, 2012 at 06:25 PM
I meant restart and no morals is what I meant! My bad.
redneckwillie3 October 24, 2012 at 07:22 PM
Wayne you must have flucked spelling.RESTART! you must have been watching nascar, gentlemen restart your engines. retard is in the book of words by Webster. Maybe she should have said mentally challenged. I'm sure it was a slip but for Sweeney to critisize what she said. Sweeney threatened the guv,he imposed punishment on his political foes, his corruption is immoral,he has no room to talk. residents of west deptford wake up do you really want another term for the dem machine

He wants the words scrubbed from our laws, not our language.
al henry October 25, 2012 at 01:22 AM
In his statement,..3rd paragraph, 2nd sentence. I have worked hard to scrub that word from our vocabulary
Wayne Klotz October 25, 2012 at 11:18 AM
Bpf53; another new name? This saying from president Obama is different then saying restart from a professional like Ann herself who always puts her foot in her mouth.
Wayne Klotz October 25, 2012 at 11:22 AM
I meant retart my bad!
Proud D October 25, 2012 at 02:03 PM
"Our" being the legislature, which he is a part of. He wants it scrubbed from the language used by the legislature in our laws.
BPF53 October 25, 2012 at 06:18 PM
Wayne....and your point is??????? Obama uses it in a joke on TV and that's somehow different than Miss. Coulter use of it....gee explain that logic. Or better yet ask the millions of parents of handicapped children with special need if they like being uses a a political football. So Obama I guess is not a professional at anything especially being President...so Miss Coulter is more of an professional!

Oh Sweeney, please go away already. The hypocrisy that comes out of your mouth is exhausting!
