West Deptford Committee Moves to Regulate Cash for Gold Companies

A new ordinance will put roadblocks in place for criminals who might try to fence stolen jewelry at local businesses.

The West Deptford township committee took the first step to regulating cash for gold-style businesses in the township, unanimously passing the first reading of an ordinance that would impose regulations on those companies.

The ordinance came about after a recommendation from Gloucester County Prosecutor Sean Dalton earlier this year on putting more oversight on those types of businesses, given the potential for thieves to fence stolen jewelry there.

West Deptford police Chief Craig Mangano called it a common-sense move.

“This will make it harder for the average criminal that burglarizes homes or steals from cars to go and get money for the items they take,” he said.

While it doesn’t prevent a thief from driving to another town to sell stolen property, Mangano said it still benefits the community, since it puts a roadblock to the closest outlets.

The ordinance will require a holding period, identification and regular reporting to the police department as deterrents.

Township administrator Eric Campo said it’s not a move to outlaw any businesses in the township.

“It simply requires registration with the police department and a permit,” he said. “(It’s) a tool to address people who are bringing stolen goods.”

The second reading on the ordinance is set for Dec. 8, with adoption coming after that reading.
