Bonner Fights Back at States

Rory Bonner won a pair of wrestleback matches Saturday. He will compete for fifth place this morning.

Rory Bonner just wasn’t ready for his wrestling season to end.

Bonner scored a pair of wrestleback victories Saturday at the State Wrestling Tournament in Atlantic City. The junior found himself in wrestlebacks after losing his quarterfinals match Friday night against top-seed Tevin Shaw of Piscataway.

Rather than bemoan the circumstance, he came out on a mission Saturday, pinning No. 5 seed Evan Bray of Belvidere in three minutes, 12 seconds.

His next victory was equally as impressive, as Bonner—who wasn’t seeded to start the tournament—defeated No. 6 seed Nick Dellaferra, of Wayne Valley, 7-0. With the win, Bonner earned a chance to make it to Sunday’s third-place bout. However, he finally ran out of steam in his third bout of the day, losing to No. 2 seed Vic Pozsonyi, of Roselle Park, in the consolation semifinals. Bonner trailed 5-0 after the first and was eventually pinned at 2:40.

Bonner will have to settle for a shot for fifth place in today’s consolations.
