A trio of lacrosse players have been selected to the Upper Atlantic boys’ and girls’ teams and will compete as All-Americans in the annual Brine National Lacrosse Classic this summer.
Maddie Waschko, Alyssa Sorrentino and Joe Diaco were named to the teams, which take the top 240 underclassmen on the girls’ side and the top 400 underclassmen on the boys’ side, and will help their squads vie for the title in the event, which takes place in Boyds, MD, from June 30 through July 3.
Sorrentino, who beat out three other keepers for her spot on the team, said she hopes making the team can be a springboard to a college career in the sport.
“It feels greater than any other feeling—that you made something, and all these coaches are going to look at you,” she said.
Washcko, who said she’s also aiming to play beyond high school, said she’s been focused on improving her game as an attacker, from the midfield transition to finding better shots, and said improving those skills was key to getting the good news.
“I was surprised—definitely surprised,” she said. “I felt like I accomplished a lot.”
The girls also credited their coaches for getting them prepared and focused ahead of the tryouts for the national teams.
“Our coaches make us so confident,” Sorrentino said.
Diaco, a midfielder on the boys’ team, said he’s proud of the fact that his efforts over the past several years were recognized.
“It feels great, and I am honored to get selected,” he said. “It's good to know hard work pays off.”
The players will join their sides in a 16-team bracket, as regional teams face off at the Maryland Soccerplex, a sprawling, 162-acre sports complex northwest of Washington, D.C.
